Tonight I got the urge to bake so I decided to make a cake. I did make it from a mix because I had a craving for funfetti and didn't know how to recreate that, lol!

The cake turned out pretty well and it made me reflect on the first cake I ever made in my apartment, about 6 months ago. Here is the best side of it that I could find to take a picture:

I did a lot of things wrong. I didn't let the cakes cool before I iced them, I didn't shave the top of the bottom layer to be even across so the top layer would sit flat on it, and I think we used spatulas to ice them because I didn't have anything else!
Using funfetti icing with the little bumps in it didn't help either, but still. That is one ugly cake!

I'd like to think tonight's turned out much better

It's those decorative sprinkles. You can sprinkle them on, or they can be mixed into things before baking. I don't much care for them because they are very sweet.

The bottom cake looks like it would be more along the lines of what I would eat because it's chocolate. But the top one, despite it being messy, looks more luscious because it looks more fluffy.

Nice! Both of them are really nice! I'm more of a chocoholic, too, though, so I'd like a piece of the second cake, please.

(Oh, who am I kidding?? I'll have a piece of both!)

Glad y'all are enjoying laughing at my cake! I sure am!
You are all correct, the first cake did taste just as good as last night's, and that's what really matters!

I DEFINITELY DID NOT have a piece of cake for breakfast
but here's a piece of cake that miraculously turned up on my table overnight (must have been the kittens):

It's kinda hard to see, but it's little flecks of colored sweet spots in the batter. Betty Crocker calls it "rainbow chip." I'm not quite sure if it's exactly equivalent to sprinkles, but it's probably pretty similar. The first cake had funfetti batter AND funfetti icing
the second just has the batter.

Nuh uh...might give me away!
I'm going to be honest here...that's a really great job for smoothing canned icing!
I hate working with it because it's a ... well, you know.

But both look yummy. And quite frankly, when it's all said and done, nothing ends a meal quite like a homemade cake.

Thanks for the info. This thread got me baking too, and I made an apple/cinnamon cake for my rental guests. They have demanded the recipe so now I have to translate it all into French!

Yummy! They both look great!

I made lemon cake from scratch for our friends' (and neighbors!) housewarming party on Saturday. I put a glaze on the cake and then decorated it. It's about as good as I could do.
I'm glad I had BF take a pic of it, because by the time we got there, the writing icing was all smudged and melted..
It still tasted good though and everyone ate it and the other one I made and just sprinkled with colored sugar.
