Question on "Natural Flavor" - Includes Sugar

Sorry - another question from the newbie:

What's the feeling on the ingredient below? I was amazed that my cat liked a "healthy" food right off the bat when I tried it (Nature's Variety Prairie), and now I see that there's sugar. However, it's down at #15 on the ingredient list. Should I worry? Should I care? Ai yi yi... =^..^=

From the NV website: "Natural Flavor: ...natural flavor is a combination of Glycine and Dextrose. Dextrose is a simple sugar that provides added energy. Glycine, however, is an amino acid that acts as a potent neurotransmitter. When used in combination and heated, Dextrose and Glycine chemically interact (called the Maillard reaction), a natural process responsible for browning and imparting a highly pleasing and palatable roasted flavor to foods, in this case the gravy. It is the same process that occurs when human foods are sautéed."

You're right, it is a matter of quantity.

If its just a tiny bit, its probably fine, however, it does represent empty calories and they really needn't be adding extra table sugar, dextrose/glucose, or fructose sweeteners to cat food.

The food needs to be palatable, but you can do that by adding a little fish and/or fat as well which most kitties love, and low glycemic foods are the way to go for kitties from what I've read.

Yeah, a little bit of sugar vs. a lot of meat by-products in the old food I'm trying to replace. Hello sugar!
