Vet Was No Help

I wish to share with all of you my personal loss. Spot passed away. He was about 5 years old. I named him Spot because when we got him he was spotted...so it seemed an appropriate name.

He had been sick for 3 or 4 days, and the Vet advised me to just let him die. I found that crude and inhuman. He said that's the usual way pets like spot are treated, and not to bother bringing him in for an evaluation. He also said that if I brought him in for treatment, it would be unlikely that anything could be done. He thanked me for calling and said he can't remember anyone asking for help like this.

So, we are very upset at losing him. We will replace him as soon as LOML grieves and comes to grip with life without him.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry you received no help from your vet.

You have my deepest sympathy. I lost a Spot too.

God rest his little soul.

Oh that sounds so odd! I am so sorry you lost your beloved baby so young.

Fly free, little angel. :rhbeart:

I have never heard of a vet behaving like that. Was there nothing more to it - had he been sick before? I am so sorry for your loss of Spot at such a young age.

I'm so very sorry. I do not understand what your vet meant by this is how we treat pets like this? This was horrible.Vets are there to treat sick animals. You need to find another vet. Again I'm sorry to hear about Spot.

Sorry for your loss.

I find it curious your vet would just out and say something like that. Was Spot sick from something serious that the vet diagnosed before he died? If not, then I would certainly have gone to another vet for a second opinion and would look for a new vet for all future pet needs.

I'm sorry for your loss. Was Spot an exotic pet your vet didn't know how to treat, or whose life expectancy was just 4 or 5 years?

I cannot imagine a Vet saying they could not help your pet to at least be out of suffering. That is horrible.

Big hugs, I'm so sorry for your loss of Spot.

I considered Spot an exotic, but it's likely that he wasn't. He was a magnificent nine inch fancy fantail goldfish. He was gorgeous. He was just about a one inch ity bity feeder fish when we adopted him. He was unfortunate in contracting dropsy. His tankmate, another fancy fantail goldfish did not get sick.

I agree with the above poster! If this was not an exotic pet/animal with a short life span (4 to 5 year) please let the appropriate people know. I am sorry for your loss either way.

I'm sorry for your loss of a 'fish'. I feel that you led us to believe that Spot was a cat.
Knowing that Spot was a 'fish', I now understand the Vet's lack of concern.
I hope you're not laughing at us who honestly felt sorry for you because we thought your beloved pet was a cat.

It's still hard to lose a fish after looking after it for 5 years....I hope you buried him properly

Aww I am still sorry for your loss. I am a little less surprised by the veterinarians reaction but still not thrilled. I hope you are doing alright and know you gave your fish a great life.

I had thought you where talking about a cat..I was furious to think a vet would say this..Sorry about your fish

While I understand the vet's attitude, somewhat, I feel he should have helped you to end Spots suffering no matter what.

Next time you are (or anyone is) faced with a suffering pet fish (I was very attached to my Oscar, Bob, and when he was dying of HITH disease, I was beside myself) You can put him in the freezer. It works very quickly to anesthetize the fish and end his suffering.

My deep condolences on the loss of Spot, once again.

I am sorry about your fish. When we had fish, I found non-chain pet stores to be the place for the best advice.

I have to disagree with putting a suffering fish in the freezer. It only slows everything down and they do not die as quickly as one thinks. they can actually still be alive for hours after.

If anything, put them in ICE cold water. The colder the water, the better.. it knocks them out quicker than just a freeze.

I am sorry to hear about Spot. I've lost a few betta fish to Dropsy.. they're near impossible to cure
