We get our Tidy Cat from Sam's Club for $9.99 a bag (50 pounds)

I've always used Fresh Step up until today. It clumps well, and most importantly, there's NO odor. It was the only litter I remember working when I still lived at home and so I stuck with it.
Yesterday however, I decided to give some other kinds a chance simply because I want to be more environmentally friendly, I worry a bit about him ingesting it, but mostly OMG IT TRACKS EVERYWHERE. I'm in a tiny separate bedroom/bathroom area, and so immediately after Grim goes potty, he jumps up on the bed and then, guess what, I've got litter sprinkled all over the bed. Ew.

So I've got a pine pellet kind I found on clearance at Petco for less than $2 and a pine/corn non-pellet kind from Petsmart. Let's see how this goes...

In reference to your original question, I guess a good recommendation would be the pellet kind from Petco. It's super cheap even when it's not on clearance and 100% dust free.

We use Swheat Scoop, and have been very happy with its performance. Considering how much longer that litter lasts (without being stinky at least) and that its lower dust and healthier for yourself and your kitties (and the environment for that matter), with the bonus of being flushable, its a great excuse to upgrade.

A recent addition to our Petsmart has been Excuisicat (or something to that effect) litter, which is available in paper, corn, corn+pine, pine, and wheat from what I saw at a lower price than Feline Pine, World's Best, and Swheat Scoop and might be worth some research.

We use Scoop Away for Maggie and non clumping for baby Monty. Altho Monty likes Maggies litter box better then his own LOL. But Maggie wont use the box if we put anything but scoop away in it and that is fine because it's reasonably inexpensive. Considering how much that cat potties, it makes the inexpensivness a bit more desireable LOL
