LONG POST! I have joined today in the hope someone can help me - I am so upset my beloved kitty (Magic) is so sick and she was fine until I took her to the vets. She had been urinating directly in fornt of the litter box for a while and I assumed it was behavioural as it was always the same place, she was fine and healthy in every other way. However I spoke to my friend (who we adpoted Magic from) and she said that when Magic did this before she had a UTI. Also everything I read online said that first I should rule out health problems so off to the vet we went. We recently moved so found the vet on YELP.com. it had good reviews and is part of the university of Illinois so assumed would be good. The vet said she had a UTI and prescribed a week of Clavamox (antibiotic). The vet called 3 days later to say they were unable to grow any cultures in the urine so she does not have a UTI but that she should finish the Clavamox in case there was another infection. Toward the end of the week we found some throw up but did not think too much of it as our other kitty throws up now and then as she is one of those kittys that eats ANYTHING! Lint, bugs, dirt, plants etc, however we then saw Magic throw up twice and this is not like her. She also stopped eating as much around this time (difficult to say when this started as other kitty may have been finishing her food), we first noticed this Sunday night (8 days since the intital vet visit). After trying to tempt her with all sorts of food we took her back to the vet last Tuesday as she was only eating a tiny amount. The vet gave her fluids, anti nausea and pepcid ac, she said it was probably the Clavamox that upset her tummy. Also just in 10 days Magic had lost 1.5lbs from being so sick! She seemed a little brighter after that and I continued to give her the pepcid every 12 hours. However still only eating a very small amount. So on Tuesday just past I called the vet again (poor Magic is so skinny now she is like a bag of bones) and the vet had us come pick up an appetite stimulant and anti nausea medicine (Mitrazapine). We have given her one of these as they are only to be given every 3 days. She is eating more since then (still not normal but more than before) but she also will not stop drinking water! She drinks so much she throws up and then she goes back to the water bowl for more. She is also obviously not feeling good, she is not as vocal as normal (usually very vocal kitty) and she is lethargic and her eyes look so sad. I am just in tears typing this, I feel so guilty that I started all of this by taking her to the vet in the first place - I should have just dealt with cleaning up the pee. I keep doing so much research on the internet that I am worried sick about what may be worng with her. We have spent over $600 already at the vets and I dont have endless funds. We had this emergency money put by for something like this but she is still sick and Im so scared she is dying. She is really my husbands kitty and he is so upset about this all - I feel terrible - he never wanted to take her in the first place as he was convinced it was behavioural - and now we have spent $600 to make her so sick. I know people will say take her to the vet but I just don't have the money. Some questions; I wanted to know what would make her drink until she threw up? Is this all because of the Claxamox or is something else going on? The vet says her kidneys are fine (2 blood tests just to be sure!) as her Creatine and BUN levles are fine. I am worried she has damaged her liver by not eating - would this make her drink water endlessly? The vet also said her bladder felt fine but could this be cystitis? Also I stopped giving her the Pepcid AC as she is so frail and I hate to pull her around and stress her out even more - should I continue with it? Please help, sorry for long post

I wish I had some answers for you. Thankfully, none of our kitties seem to have a problem with any antibiotics - but some kitties most certainly do. The rapid weight loss and excessive drinking of water are clearly signs there is a problem that isn't being addressed. At this point, I'd find another vet for a 2nd opinion.

Her problem may well have been cystitis to begin with, but is clearly something else now.

I don't know about the dose of pepcid. Our kitty was just diagnosed with cancer in his stomach, and he has bleeding ulcers. Our vet just put him on 10mg of pepcid a/c 1x per day. That's the human dose instructions for the "regular" pepcid a/c. The "maximum strength" is 20mg 1x per day. Vet said if that's all we could find, we should cut it in half and give once a day.

The one thing I would definitely do is syringe feed her. Does she throw up most of what she eats? If so, I would not stop the pepcid - but I would consider lowering the dose. But she needs her nutrition, whatever happens.

The throw up is only watery - she seems to be making herself vomit by drinking so much. She has been pooping since eating more on the appetite stimulant. Its a little loose but hardly surprising considering how sick she is.
