Cat rarely sleeps

My cat Albert is 3 years old. He's happy and healthy. I know cats are supposed to sleep a LOT, especially during the day. When my husband and I are at home, he is never asleep. I am a teacher, so during the summer and around holidays I spend a good part of the day at home and he never naps unless I do. We of course don't know what he is doing when we leave the house or are asleep ourselves (he never wakes us but is always wide awake if we get up to use the bathroom or when we wake up in the mornings), but on average we are asleep/gone for about 10-12 hours a day during the summer months. That can't possibly be good for him! I worry that he isn't sleeping enough and will end up sick. Lots of times if we are on the computer or watching a movie he will sit in our line of vision and stare at us, "pecking the corn" aka with his head nodding like he's exhausted. He's doing that to me right now actually. During the school year I assume he will get a lot more sleep (as long as he's actually sleeping while we are gone/asleep).

Has anyone else experienced this? He's is the 6th cat I've owned in my lifetime and I've never had a cat like him before. Will he be okay or should I consult the vet?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to TCS. Sounds like you have a true love bug, correction, 'love kitty' in your life!
As far as everything you have described, IMO he sounds completely normal and so much like Maia!
Maia always has both eyes and ears on me at all times. Any move I make, any breath I take, she is watching me! I sometimes work extremely long hours, and sometimes have a week or month off at a time.........She is always mewing at the door if I am gone for ten minutes or 10 hours.

I'm pretty sure Holland sleeps while I'm at work because it seems like she's ALWAYS awake when I'm home. She sleeps on my bed at night, but often I will wake up and she won't be there. What is she doing? I don't think I want to know... I know she plays at night because her toys will be in different places in the morning.

She also stares at me and tries to get my attention if I'm reading or watching TV. It sounds like Albert is the same and just wants your undivided attention when you're home. I'm betting since you're home now during the summer he is resisting napping because he doesn't want to miss anything...

I would think that this is normal. During the week when I am working from home and DH is at work, the kitties sleep during the day and are more active later in the evening. During weekends when hubby is home and we end up doing work around the house (there is more activity around the house on weekends), the boys are up and following us around and being curious. They need to "participate" in everything going on. So by the evening they are tired and kind of dosing but still trying to stay up, in case they miss anything. Your kitty sounds like a real sweety.

I have six internet IP cameras in my home for security and to monitor the safety of my cats, and yeah they sleep most of the time I am away.

When I am active at home, they generally only sleep when I do, and are half asleep when I'm watching a movie or like right now taking this boring 6hr defensive driving course online.

Since they don't sleep as deep as humans do, he was probably sleeping but woke up to you getting up.

Thank you for the replies! Albert truly is my lovie little shadow. He brings his toys for us to throw, he greets us at the door and always responds when we talk to him. I feel much better knowing there are other kitties like him out there. I can stop worrying about.his apparent lack of sleep. I love all the cats ive ever had but this guy is something else!

I have a similar kitty - Fifi, a 2 year old female calico who was quite hyperactive when we first got her and we noticed that she hardly slept as well. I'm a very late sleeper so I can see her being awake just patrolling the house constantly then early mornings my wife would say Fifi is quite perked up as well. Only in the afternoons do I see her resting and closing her eyes and probably 2 to 3 hrs max then she gets up and do her routine things again. I'm sure she naps here and there outside of my vision but it just seem she is awake way more than my other lazy female tabby who truly sleeps constantly.. all stretched out and no care in the world.... guess she is the type that let her friend do all the work... I think it is just the makeup of some kitties to sleep a lot less than the general group and as long as Fifi appears healthy to me, I'm not really concerned about her health.

I was wondering the same thing myself about my boy kitty. He hardly ever sleeps, where as my female sleeps all the time. I thought there must be something wrong with him and was wondering if his lack of sleep made him more hyper. Seems he is always awake. Thanks for posting this question. It is good to know that there are other kitties that are the same way.
