She's a bit of a brat.

My cat Misty is almost 3 years old. My boyfriend and I bought her from a pet store (I know...) when she was only a few months old and she was a sweetheart; when he took a nap she would ball up on the back of his neck and slept there for hours. This little kitten that could fit in our cupped hands would constantly play, run around and arch her back, jumping at us sideways and attack then run off, it was the cutest thing. When he found our other cat Smokey, who's estimated to be a couple weeks younger than Misty (he found her in a carrier on the side of the road) it only took them a few days to get used to each other and they were inseparable. When they got over the just getting to know each other fights, they always groomed each other and slept next to, or in many cases, draped over each other.

Now they're almost 3, Smokey's such an angel and will love anyone and purrs at the slightest touch, but Misty's grown to be pretty mean. Smokey will be doing absolutely nothing but laying down and Misty will slowly walk over, back slightly arched, and out of nowhere just swing at poor Smokey for no reason. Whenever Smokey's laying on a suitcase, the cat bed or even one of our dressers, Misty will go over and start cleaning her, knowing Smokey doesnt like being cleaned by her anymore, and when Smokey's gone Misty will lay down and fall asleep right where Smokey was laying. She chases Smokey around the room, swinging her paws, jumping and tackling Smokey to the floor, biting her, all for no reason whatsoever. Smoke doesnt take it as playing; she hisses, growls and very rarely will she fight back. She tries running from Misty but Misty wont back off. She's cornered Smokey in the closet many times, and Smokey wont defend herself. Smokey's a fat cat with A LOT of hair and there have been times I've found small clumps of it all over the floor and furniture. There have also been times I could actually hear Misty's claws tearing into Smokey. A spray bottle can only do so much, and Misty either doesnt remember what it's there for or doesnt care; she goes right back for Smokey later on. All of this is done for absolutely no reason from what I've seen.

Misty will also come over to me when I'm sitting down and start purring, headbutting my face basically saying "love me!", she'll lay in my lap and just soak up attention. Then the slightest move, even if I set my arm down next to her, will cause her to go insane. She'll grab my arm with her front paws and start kicking with her back, biting and scratching any part of me that she can get to. When my boyfriend tries to pet her or pick her up, she fusses, swats at his face and bites. He usually doesnt make it any better and teases her, playfully pushing her around and such then complains that she doesnt like him. I wonder why? -_- I've told him many, many times that when he does that it doesnt help anything, and it only makes her uglier but he just shrugs it off and doesnt listen to me. What could be her issue? Is she just a mean cat in general or is it because my boyfriend is usually the instigator and makes things worse and now because of what he does she thinks Smokey and I will be the same way?

Misty is an example of a hyperactive teenager. Like humans at that age, they're rebellious, over curious and want to be the boss.
You are right about your boyfriend picking and petting her when she does not want to and then teasing her. Some cats will react quite violently and it will not help improve her behavior towards you or any other person.
I read here that natural calming remedies can help. Also, use interactive toys to play with Misty so she does not go after your arms, or any other part of the body. When she misbehaves be firm with a NO and a hiss. Give her a treat when she's a good girl. Time outs can also lessen aggressive behavior.

Interesting. I have a brother and a sister, both altered, with similar interaction.

My boy is 2x the size of the girl. He's 13lb now, maybe more, she's only 8. They are 8months old, still babies really.

Boy is an alpha, really dominant, he's also a sweetheart, like your Misty. He will come and purr and sit on me, and purr and constantly want attention. He will headbutt my head, my body, anytime I'm near him. He RUNS to my voice even if I look at him, purring all the way, just a sweatheart of a cat. BUT.. he's alpha. My girl, who's btw very timid, will come to me and purr and want attention, but only for 1min at a time. She will sit next to me, but not on me. I'll brush her, she will purr, but she'll only want it for a little bit. She's very sweet, but not like him, not people oriented. When strangers come the door, he runs to the door to greet them, she runs the other way, you get the picture

Anyway, back to their interaction. Very similar to Misty and Smokey. I have a few favorite lounging spots. A cat tree cradle, a cardboard lounger, and my couch.

Act 1 10am Girl is in the cat tree cradle, grooming, bothering no one. Boy will come and start aggressively licking her, then biting her neck, her back, then licking again. She's had enough, she fights back, but mostly flees, he sits down in cradle, seeming weirded out, like he really wanted to groom her but she doesn't want it.

I do nothing.

Act 2 10:02am - not kidding, this happens this quick... Girls moved on to cardboard lounger, happy, grooming again. He gets up from the tree, goes to the lounger, repeats. She runs, he's again the king of the lounger, but he seems to not even care.

I do nothing.

Act 3 - 10:04am boy will come and just sleep next to me on the couch, the girl will go and sleep on cat tree again, all is quiet and all are happy for next 6 hours.

Just wanted to add he NEVER approaches her when she's asleep, only when they make eye contact will he assert his dominance. If she's asleep and he wants to lay down next to her, he just does it quietly, without disturbing her.

Also, different from your case, he never chases her around. When he claims the spot she was in 1 second ago, he pretty much stays there unless he decides her new spot is also his new favorite spot.

They do everything together, play, eat, etc. I try to feed from one dish to bring them together even more, except for AM meals [different doses of l-lysine]. They're very bonded to each other, when they were younger they slept with each other all the time, not so much now. I think the girl is conditioned to think that if she's next to him, he'll want to groom and bite her again, and she's not too big on that.

In my case though, the cats do not get into anywhere near the fights you describe. The girl always runs before anything escalates. He never goes into any attack modes, just bewilderment that she does not want his attention in that way. Maybe in my case it helps that their size difference is so much that the girl does not try to injure him or teach him not to touch her, just leaves.

I've been using Feliway for about 2-3 weeks now, and can see results. Before I brought it, the girl would escalate to a point where she'd hiss back and really fight and want to stay put, now it's more a very quick encounter and she's gone and happy again in another lounging spot, 5 seconds later, and so is he, also happy, 5 seconds later.

Hope this helps. From what I read in other posts, this is an extremely common occurrence in multi-pet homes. One will always be alpha, the others just have to accept it.

I remember the dynamic between my brother and I, who's 6 years younger than me. When I came into the living room, I immediately turned the TV channel to what I wanted to watch, disregarding his yells and screams for justice. When you're bigger, when you're alpha, you just pretty much do what you want. Unless you have a parent stepping in, but even a parent can only do so much, 90% of the time, the kids have their own hierarchy of power. And think about the outcome, as the younger one, will you stay - probably not. Will you fight back - not really. Will you leave - most probably
