Greetings dear animal friends,

(Sorry if my English is not that well, it's not my native language)

For nearly a whole month now I've had a problem with my male cat.

I realised that something was wrong when I found transparent sputum on his sleeping blanket. Also, he had a slight cough, which is why I went to the vet immediately.

She administered mild antibiotics in tablet form.
After four days of regimen, he seemed to get better.
I let him go out of the house, which, retrospectively, seemed like bad idea regarding the cold, wet weather. He didn't return for hours. We finally found him under the staircase to the attic, staring in total apathy.
We instantly took him to the veterinarian. He felt hot and gasped increasingly. His purring sounded rattling, kind of clogged, as if he had mucus in his throat. He had almost 106°F temperature, so the vet injected him with antipyretics as well as an antibiotic. She also too a listen and noticed that his lungs were nearly completely coated, up to his heart. Precautionally, she took a blood sample for a haemogram, especially to rule out FIV and leucosis.

After 6 day/3 injections, he again got better, he looked normal, had a sound temperature. The haemogram showed an increase in leucocytes and blood sugar level (which came from the excitement of the blood sample being taken).
An increased value of inflammation pointed to a bacterial infection, i.e. some kind of pneumonia/bronchitis.

On advice of my vet, we further on gave him small antibiotic tablets, he also could go out of the house again.
I don't know if he was caught by the rain that night or if something else had happened, but his cough did not cease yet and even stayed on a consistently strong level.
It sounds mucous, rattling and choking, his coughing attacks last up to 30 seconds, as if he'd regurgitate something. Apart from the first time I mentioned above, there never was any sputum.

By now, we give him ACC Akut expectorant three times a day. Furthermore, he gets antibiotic and restorative injections for his immune system.
We also keep him inside until the weather get's better, and even then, we will only let him out at daytime.

Our vet told us that asthma would sound different, after I showed her a video of one of his coughing attacks (which you can watch below). Also, his x-rays showed nothing suspicious. Parasited, our vet mentioned, would cause him to get thinner - and a foreign body in his throat would be locatable, while his whole lung area is affected.

Oh, I should mention that one week before his coughing started, he got his regular annual vaccination. He also hung out with a quite ruffled stray cat. But there's nothing more "suspicious" that I could tell you...

I am really helpless and clueless.

Not only because of the extertions for the cat (transport to the vet, injections, curfew, muscle aches from coughing), but also because neither my vet nor I have a clue on what to do next... my vet just suggests that it is just long-drawn-out... but for how long can we keep him inside, give him injections and let him cough... particularly because he is used to roam free outside.

Perhaps you can help me. Could you give me any advice on how to understand his sickness? I don't know what to do anymore, and I'm really down because of this...

Here's a video of one of his coughing/choking attacks which a friend of mine uploaded. I won't keep it up for long, but perhaps it helps you to figure out what's wrong with my cat...

Thank you for your help!! Any advice is appreciated!

Hi, I am sorry your kitty is going through this....

I am not sure you have heartworms in your area, but since your kitty goes outside, has your cat been tested? Also, has your vet done chest x-rays to rule out heart disease?
