Hi all,

Can anyone help please! am going a bit crazy here! Lily is now about 9 weeks old, we have had her for 3 weeks - she has no problem using litter for peeing in but as for pooping she has only a 60/40 success rate! she has two litter trays, one upstairs in her bedroom and one downstairs in a quiet corner. I keep them clean and my 8 month old Melvin, has not used litter since he was about three months old (he loves the garden, which now has many mounds of dirt dotted everywhere.) Lily keeps pooping right next to litter. She seems very happy, not sure why this is happening!

Pooping next to the box is one of the biggest signs she doesn't like the litter or the box itself - what litter are you using?

I'm using "Breeders Choice" but you are spot on because she does poop in the bigger box upstairs but will not poop in the smaller one downstairs, so obviously need to go buy new box same size as the upstairs one!

Thank you

I will bet you it is not the box- it is the litter- Breeder's Choice is pellets, a LOT of cats do not like pellet litters, and this reaction happens really often- it happened to my cat Lucky. With poop it is even more common, since they stand on it for longer and it is not comfortable on their paws- especially for kittens. I would highly advise you to get a fine,
unscented clay litter, or clumping clay litter. If you are in the US, to re-train her, get a litter called "Kitten Attract". That should solve your problem...

I recommend Swheat Scoop Multicat litter, available cheapest in 40lb bags at Petsmart. My kitties love it.

Its organic (wouldn't recommend it, but you could eat it), nice and soft (kitten/declaw safe), can be flushed down the toilet, biodegradable, renewable, and the wheat enzymes naturally absorb odor and thus tends to last longer than clay. Many don't know that clay contribues to strip mining operations, never biodegrades in the landfill, tends to be dusty, contains silica (a known carcinogen if inhaled), and sodium bentonite which is controversial since its insoluble and a bit gets ingested when cats groom themselves. Other alternatives are Feline Pine clumping (not pellets) or World's Greatest Cat Litter (made from corn; I like the red bags the best for maximum clumping).

I'm in Australia, haven't heard of Swheat Scoop, will google and try to find it or similar!

Like the idea of being able to flush!
