Hi everyone! I am new here... We got a new kitten in March. He was 3 months old at the time, and is a Siberian kitten.

I had noticed at the end of May that he had a lot of loose stool. He was on Wellness kitten dry, and proplan canned food. He had a vet visit, and there were no issues w/ his stool sample. We tried 2 rounds of anti-diarrheal gel meds.. no help. Also did a 5 day dose of a pill med (can't remember name). I did a lot of reading about dry food online, and discussed diet w/ the vet. We decided to take him off the dry and stay w/ canned. As soon as I stopped the dry, his stool started to form.

He has been on canned ever since. For the most part his stool was good, however recently it is getting soft again. I have tried some new brands of food, and I'm wondering if that could be it. He seems to do well on the Fussie Cat brand of can food.. I have been trying Merrick, regular and before grain, as they sell larger cans and it's more cost effective. He is still getting Fussie Cat as well. I have also fed him Weruva, but the amount of food in the cans is small... so I've been staying away from that.

A few weeks ago I did try a small amount of Natural Balance dry food (GreenPea/Duck).. and immediately his stool went soft. It got better, but as I said.. I've been noticing a change. Sometimes it's normal, sometimes it's soft. The last few days has been more soft.

I have a small bag of Royal Canin dry , sensitive stomach, that I haven't opened yet. I feel like he's hungry all the time... which is why I thought about doing some dry... though I have read a lot of articles saying dry food really isn't for cats.

I did feed him the raw medallions (Nature's Variety), when he first came home.. but the vet scared me on raw diet.. moreso w/ stating that salmonella could be in his stool which could be passed onto my kids. (he does sometimes have stool in his fur).

I know I should probably call the vet soon.. but wanted to get some opinions here before I do. I'm wondering if I should just stick to the FussieCat for now... ?????

Thanks!
Stephanie

If I were you, I'd highly consider feeding a raw diet, and doing some research on it and why it is safe. Vets say what they are taught in school, and are taught by the large pet food companies, but tend to not do any more research.

Andrea Tasi, VMD (now an advocate of feeding canned/raw to cats):

Veterinarians actually receive very little training in nutrition. In my 4 years of veterinary school, I had one class, one semester long, on nutrition. Most of this course focused on which prescription diet to recommend for which disease and why. For well pets, I was taught to recommend "Pick one dry food and stick with it." A major pet food manufacturer supplied free pet food to veterinary students, and free prescription diets to the University's veterinary hospital for use with hospitalized animals. Is it any wonder that most vets come out of school recommending that manufacturer's products?
http://feline-nutrition.org/nutritio...nella-raw-food is a very good article for you to read through, to help explain why salmonella is not a problem with raw. http://rawfed.com/myths/zoonotic.html is another article talking about raw fed cats/dogs and their "danger" to humans.

http://rawfedcats.org/ is another site you could read through, it has lots of information about feeding raw, as well as what/how much to feed.

Another thing that may be helpful is to add probiotics to the food. Holistic Select Transition Solution is a good one - add it like it is salt/pepper - not the amount they recommend

Have fun and I hope this helps you
