We were called out with our fire company to a structure fire (I'm on the rescue squad). In the end 6 FD's and 3 squads were there.

About a 1/2 hour after I arrived to the scene (was on the road so I arrived in my personal vehicle and parked it in an adjacent driveway as I missed the rig), one of the firemen brought out this very lethargic cat that wasn't breathing well at all. Another fire fighter and I hooked it up to Oxygen with a Non-Rebreather Mask for close to 45 minutes. Another 1/2 hour later I was given permission to transport the cat to a vet of the fire fighter's who was helping me with the cat. During that 1/2 hour of time, we were able to get the cat some water, and she took it. She began to perk up as we were getting her ready to take her to the vet, we put her down and I began to pet her. She arched her back against my hand and raised her tail and even began to purr. By the time I got her to the vet, she was still very tired and in shock but she was more responsive and the vet injected her with fluids. She was one of the lucky ones, she only had singed hair on the outside (granted there could be more damage inside we don't see) and obvious smoke inhalation.

The owners of the house weren't home at the time of the fire and they had 3 dogs and 4 cats total. 2 of the dogs died and 2, possibly 3 cats passed too.

Just thought I'd share.

Bless you for save that kitty! You truly are a guardian
! It's so sad that the others didn't make it. I don't think I'd be able to handle that. Those poor babies...may they rest in peace.

Great story......If you saved one of gods animals.....you are a hero to us. I am sure that you did everything that you could to save those animals.

I'm so glad you were able to save that poor kitty and I'm terribly sad about the others. Losing my pets to a fire is one of my biggest fears and it nearly happened once when I was living at an apartment complex. Being that you are a firefighter, are there any tips you would mind mentioning that we could take to ensure our pets are found/rescued in such an emergency?

First off, I'm a rescue squad person... an EMT. That said, I've seen in catalogs and handed out during community day type of events a sticker/decal you put on a window or door that lets fire fighters know there are pets in the house. This of course doesn't mean that we (or the firemen) will find them in a timely mannor. Hopefully they will see the animals either lying on the floor near the doors or windows or clawing at the windows trying to get out.

Unfortunately a lot of animals will run and hide under funiture where they can't be reached. You can't untrain panic. The only thing that would help in this time of you not being home and the house locked up, would be to have outside animals. If you are home, you could open a window hear and there, keep the escape route you took open (like out the front or back door, garage open...). Yuo could also try to cover the underspaces of your funiture by filling the spaces but that isn't always effective.

This kitty in question was lucky, the area she was found collapsed 30 seconds after the fire fighter brought her out.
