I have two cats currently, Sophie, who is almost a year and a half old, and Gipper, who is 9 months old. Sophie I have had since she was 4 months old and is VERY attached to me. Gipper I have had since she was 4 months old also, but is a very skittish and timid cat with everyone except my boyfriend and myself. Sophie was a very timid kitten as well but now is the most social cat that loves everything and everyone. Sophie has always been in a multi-cat household and has ALWAYS befriended whatever cats lived there at the time(I was living with family until February) and when we moved to our own place, she cried and cried and cried all day and night long because she was the only cat.
So, we got Gipper and it only took a day for Sophie and Gipper to become best friends. They sleep together, play constantly, eat together, and clean each other pretty often. They love each other so much and have never fought even once, they haven't even growled at each other since the day I brought home Gipper.
We decided to get a new kitten in hopes that they would bond while they are all still relatively young so we can have a three cat household. Due to Sophie's loving nature, I thought she would love this kitten almost immediately since she has loved every other cat, and I let the kitten explore with Sophie standing by. It has only been two days, but Sophie has been so aggressive to not only the new kitten, but also to Gipper and myself as well! This is so incredibly out of character for her and I am so confused. Gipper and Sophie now are growling and hissing at each other and haven't been together all day.
Why are they fighting with each other and me instead of the new kitten?
They growl and hiss at the kitten, which I expected of Gipper but not of Sophie! Sophie watches the kitten and paws at her back playfully but once the kitten looks her in the eye Sophie goes back to growling and hissing. Gipper has been hiding under the bed this whole time except to come out to eat/drink and pee/poo.
I am afraid this is going to be permanent and I just want my two loving kitties to love each other once again. I understand the aggression towards the kitten, but why to each other and me? Sophie and Gipper just will not stop hissing and growling at each other. A few minutes ago Sophie came out to eat, and Gipper followed her but when she got to the food bowl Sophie started the hissing and growling all over again. After seeing this, I am thinking that Gipper wants to be with Sophie still and isn't aggressive towards her, but Sophie isn't having any of it. Gipper was my little cuddlebug, so I am really upset that she is so upset.
Also, I've been keeping the kitten in the bathroom at night with her own litter box, bed, and food/water bowls so Sophie and Gipper don't fight over their own things. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
