Soft Stool/pooping in 'random areas'

We have two cats both are almost five years old.

One is a long haired black cat (neutered male) and the other is a silver female tabby (spayed).

Having an issue with the black cat.

He is currently pooping very loose stools I would almost say diarrhea that are EXTREMELY smelly. I first realized there was a problem, when I was putting some laundry away and realized that he'd pooped on the laundry, then when I came home thinking it was a stinky litter box mess to realize that it was on the carpet.

( I was at home once in the living room and then found him trying to go right in the middle of the living room on the carpet (I grabbed him and tried desperately to bring him to the litter box) as he just let go (not a lot) and just pooped. )

It seems that its hit or miss whether he'll go to the litter box or not.

We thought we'd give it a couple of days before we took him to the vet to see if it straightened itself out or not, but he was going to the litter box for the last few days, and the poop was still soft it seemed like it was getting a bit better, but then today again just pooped not in his litter box.

We keep the litter box extremely clean. I clean it everyday (sometimes literally after the cat poops) and clean the entire thing maybe once a week or once every two weeks.

Both cats are being fed a mixture of:

Royal Canin Medi Cal (Dental Dry)
&
Royal Canin Medi Cal (Preventative)

They have both been on the preventative since they were very young, and the Dental was added about a year ago and haven't had any issues until now. (The dental was added after we realized one of our cats had serious dental issues had to have some teeth pulled as it seemed he was only eating wet food and it had become an issue)

Both cats continue to eat fine, drink plenty of water and energy level seems the same, no additional stress in the household as far as I can tell.

Any ideas from well anyone?

I would definitely speak to the vet - off the top of my head, it may be suggested to give the little pooper a bland diet of rice and poached chicken for a day or two to settle his tummy, or, when my boy had soft poo, the vet prescribed Tylan powder, a mild antibiotic which is often used to treat symptoms of irritable bowel. In our case, it worked like a charm. Dante does seem to get soft bowels every now and again, often if he's had a touch too much wet food (don't ask - in a perfect world I'd feed him all wet, but he loves his dry kibble - CD for urinary issues - and does seem to have a reaction to larger portions of wet food.

I suspect the poor little guy is (a) just not able to get ot the box on time when the urge hits and (b) it is a way of showing you he's ill. He's not doing it on purpose to be mean or anything - my guy was so upset about the whole situation, but once the Tylan powder gained traction, he immediately kept using the box without an accident.

Also, just a thought - he may start associating the box with the painful elimination. You might want to get a brand new extra box and fill it with Cat Attract litter (Petsmart carries it). I swear by Cat Attract whenever there's an elimination problem - but I also swear it's always worth a call/visit to the vet to make sure there's not a physical problem present.

BTW, clean the accident areas with a good enzyme cleaner -I learned that in a hurry.

Good luck - I know from experience this is no fun and that you're worried about your boy.

I would for sure talk to the vet about this as soon as you can. I've not had a problem like this but Darlilli had some advice which sounds appropriate. It almost sounds like IBS in humans. Hope he hasn't gotten into anything he shouldn't have. As Darlilli pointed out, he probably can't get to the box in time. And DO use a good enzyme cleaner I will definitely second that!

After his poop situation is cleared up, you might want to invest in some Cat Attract to sprinkle in the litter box. He might get the idea it's okay to poop anywhere if not redirected back to the box.

Has anything in your home recently changed? Schedule? Vacation? Visitors?

I had a cat who would poop inappropriately with loose, smelly poops when she was stressed out. The vet called it stress induced fecal incontinence. Once we got things on an even keel in our home, it stopped.

Nothing has changed on the schedule at all, and it seems to be getting better now.. I don't know it was like a week of that and that was it
