WHY ME?? aka "The Great White Killer"

Or, erm, black.

*sigh*
So I hadn't taken Grimalkin out for a walk in a long time (he usually just lays there like the leash weighs 20 lbs) and he seemed fairly interested, so I let him out, got the leash on him and sat down on a rock.
He wandered the yard a bit, mostly chewed grass and did nothing. He seemed kinda interested in this bush, but I didn't really think much about it until he stretched up into it and I heard the chirps of baby birds... ;____;

It was chaos. He already had one in his mouth and the others took off in all directions, bouncing along the ground. I didn't even know what to do, he took off after a Second one, grabbing both in his mouth (*oink oink*) and when I tried to stop him, he backed away and out of his leash...

I did my best to herd him back towards the house, I didn't want him to get upset and take off (it was 4am here and he's a black cat) so I stopped trying to make him drop the bird he already had. I tried to go back while he was preoccupied and save one of them, but the dumb thing made too much noise and as soon as I went to the back of the bush to look for him, he was already at the front of the bush and killed it too..

So then I was stuck behind rose bushes with my flashlight on him just waiting for him to finish crunching up the baby bird.. :[ When he tried to go back for another one though, I said 'enough is enough' and scooped him up, waded through the roses and plopped him inside the house.

I got a secondary flashlight and searched and searched but I couldn't find any other baby birds. I felt bad for the mommy and daddy bird who would come back to an empty nest. (Though I wondered why they weren't there in the first place..)

On the way back, I thought I saw daddy bird, but it turns out it was a baby! It was bigger than all the others, so it had the strength to hop farther away! I scooped it up, took it back to the nest and set it in. A good day's work, right? But then the darn thing jumped out! I had one heck of a time trying to get the birdie to STAY in its nest! And to make matters worse, daddy bird came around and was swooping and chirping angrily over my head. When I finally got the bird to stay, I ran back into the house for my own safety! xD

*Edit* For some reason, I can't get Imageshack to cooperate with TCS, so I put my photos as attachments.*
I took a couple pictures of the baby bird since I had it in my hands anyways, so here they are:

And the Great "White" Killer looking innocent.. (or guilty maybe)

He's taken turns eating and standing by the door while I've been typing this... He's such a pig.. -___-

What a cute baby! I hope the parents take good care of him!

Your kitty was just doing what's natural. It's upsetting when it's a cute little baby bird. My cat, Pumpkin (RIP) once got out and did her darndest to catch the chipmunks under the wood pile. I'm glad I caught her before she caught them!

He's a lovely killer, though. Looks very much like my Pumpkin.

Oddly, when I went back out to pick up the dead birdies, the bird I rescued was no longer in the nest... Momma bird flew over and chirped at me for a bit, but then left.

Do you think the baby ran away again and the parents were looking for it? What do birds even do when their baby falls out of the nest?

They will look for a missing baby for awhile, but will not be able to get the little one back up into the nest. I'd go look for it, and see if you can find it. It looks almost old enough to fledge, so even if you fed it for a week or so, it would be easier than wondering. (You can feed it small worms, pinhead crickets, or tiny slivers of chop meat.)

My dad, God rest his soul, used to bring home every baby bird he found, and raised them to be released. He also kept pigeons when we lived in the Bronx.

If you find him, you can probably call a rescue for advice too!

At that age they usually leave the nest and their parents feed them on the ground. If the nest is in a place that they can hop up to it they might spend the night in it, but usually they stay under a bush. So the parents will still feed that baby, don't worry! The babies might not have even been in the nest when Grimalkin got them.

No, I know they were in the nest because he stood up on his hind legs to reach them.
