I want to get started on brushing my cats' teeth, especially now that Picasso's getting his adult teeth in.

What brand tooth paste do you use?
What kind of tooth brush?
How often do you brush? What's recommended?

thanks!!

Karen - this is off-topic, but is Picasso a girl or a boy?!??!?!?!! I keep seeing different references and I'm very confused!

Also - on-topic - I too would like to begin a teeth care regimen. Very interested in seeing these answers!

Hey!

I like the C.E.T. brand of toothcare products. They come in flavours like poultry, fish, beef, malt and vanilla-mint. But, what I particularly like about it is that it has enzymatic action. So, it works even if you can't really brush their teeth and you can only just wipe it on.

I would probably start by just getting the toothpaste and putting it on your finger so that she can lick it off. I find they tend to like the taste anyway, so it's not too bad. And slowly, as she's getting used to that, you can perhaps try sticking your finger into her mouth and moving around the sides and reaching towards the back of the mouth. The finger brush-type toothbrushes are probably best.

As for how often... uhm, as often as you can I suppose.

Sorry!! Picasso is a girl. I am so used to calling cats boys, it slipped!! LOL

thanks for your advice! I will look into that brand and finger brush. I wondered if the finger brushes are easier to manage than the tooth brushes!

Now that I think about it, it may only be available from your vet's office.

And also, if you find you can't brush her teeth, there are also other dental products you can try, though obviously not as good as brushing itself. There are mouthwash-type products you can add to their drinking water, but they may not like the taste, and also dental chews/treats, such as the C.E.T. Oral Hygeine Chews or Greenies which help to reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar.

Hope that helps! Good luck with brushing!

my cats get greenies whenever I remember to give it to them. few times a week.

I'll see what Petco has to offer. gotta stop by the vet's later anyway to pick up some brochures too

looking online, Amazon has the CET for sale for $2.25 each (price varies by flavor) as opposed to the $8 each.

I ordered 2 flavors toothpaste, 2 toothbrushes and a mini brush for Picasso as she's still small. not bad for 15 bucks

I have the CET poultry toothpaste. I can't get near Dorothy with it, but Genever likes to lick it off my finger. That's usually what I do, but sometimes I get brave and get in her mouth. I have one of the tiny brushes but only used it once so far. It's kind of easier to just rub her teeth/gums with my finger. I just do a quick swipe pretty much, but I guess I should start making more of an effort...

I know you already ordered yours from Amazon, but I got mine from EntirelyPets.com. I get my Advantage from them too (recommended by others on here), and they always send emails with coupons and sales and whatnot.

Oh wow! Good deal then! Well, you said it's cheaper through Amazon, but I get discount codes in the emails from EntirelyPets, I seem to get one every week or 2 actually, you might want to get on their email list for future purchases...
