I went to the mountains with my mom over the weekend, just a short vacation. My sister and BIL are camping right now so we had to make plans for the dog (Jake) and for Holland while we were gone. My little brother ended up taking Jake to his place after work Friday and returned him yesterday afternoon. I had him open up the basement door while Jake was gone so that Holland could have the run of the house and not be downstairs by herself for 3 days.

I made a comment before we left about having my brother come by on Saturday to check in on Holland and scoop her litterbox, and my mom just said "Oh for crying out loud, she'll survive for 3 days. That's why people get cats!"
I understand that my mom is not a cat person, but I didn't get a cat so that it would be "easy" to go on vacation!!

I missed my little girl so much this weekend...
She was so extra cuddly last night, and it just about killed me to get up and go to work this morning. The good news is I found an apartment and we are going to be moving out in a few weeks!!!
I can't wait to get Holland out of that basement. And, it's only 5 minutes away from work (right now I commute 45 minutes to an hour each way, depending on traffic). I am SO excited!

Glad to hear about your good news!
But honestly I leave our cats alone for weekend very often. So I can kind of see why she would say that, but I can understand why people do like someone to come by daily to check on them too! Just depends on the owner and cats I think.

I didn't realize that Holland was a real "basement cat"!!

So glad you'll be moving into your own apartment soon and she'll be able to be out and explore at her leisure and desire.

Congrats on finding an apartment!!!
I know you've been waiting for this for a long time!

I hear you about your mom (and many other people) thinking cats are totally fine on their own for days. Maybe they are, but I don't even like leaving them overnight, but I do sometimes. Luckily our friend Scott lives a few blocks away, and he loves Genever and Dorothy, so if we're out of town, he comes over and spends some time with them in the evenings and feeds them in the mornings too. But if we go out Saturday afternoon and come back Sunday afternoon, they'd be ok. 2 or more nights, though, and I'd ask Scott if he could catsit.

Before Patches went on medication I would leave my cats alone for the weekend. That was leaving on Saturday morning and coming back on Sunday night. I would scoop out the litter boxes real good right before I left and put out extra dry food and water. Now that Patches gets a pill each day and they are supposed to be every 24 hours I can't do that anymore. That isn't the reason I have my two cats though. I am glad you are getting your own apartment so your kitty won't be banished to the basement anymore.

Yup, but not for long!

It's not that I don't feel I can leave her for a few days, and honestly, if I did have someone to come by to look in on her, she'd hide anyway...

More than anything I'm just ready, ready, ready to get out of my mom's house!!! Holland is treated like a second-class pet compared to the dog, and I just get eye rolls if I mention that I worry about her or that I miss her, God forbid. Plus I am just waaaay too old to be living in my mom's basement...

I think I must be on the far end of the spectrum, because I don't even feel comfortable leaving my cats alone for a whole day
DH and I don't take vacations together anymore since we got cats. Right now he is visiting his family, and I'm going later this week to visit family. I've been coming home at lunch to check on the cats. Honestly, even if I had someone I totally trusted to look in on them, I would not feel comfortable leaving them.

Some people just don't get it.

You must be so excited for your new place hun, congrats!
Does this mean Holland may be getting a sibling soon?

Hee hee, that's the plan! (don't tell Holland...
)

I want to get her moved and comfy in the new place before I get another one, so I don't stress her out too much. I also want to be sure I can take a couple days off work for introductions. The good news is, with the new apartment so close to work, I can go home on my lunch break!

Poppy is still on the backburner, though when I talked to his meowmy recently she said that they were making things work and it sounded like she really didn't want to give him up. I also work pretty close to the Denver Dumb Friends League, and they are just finishing up a promotion where you can adopt a cat for $10!! Unfortunately it's over at the end of July, and I won't be ready to adopt before then, but I keep thinking I need to go in a visit some kitties.
I also want to start volunteering there, now that I'll be living so close.
