So, I made the decision yesterday to adopt a couple of mice from a friend of mine. She had gotten a female from a breeder who was "selling out." And, at the time, she knew that the said female was likely pregnant. Well, a couple of days later, she went from one mouse to a dozen! And, while her husband was on board in the beginning, he began threatening to sell the babies as feeders. Thus, I now have two female mice of my own.

I had originally decided to adopt a trio of females. However, the mice were old enough to potentially begin breeding with one another and were separated out. My friend had the males (6) separated from the females (5) by the time I arrived to pick out my new pets. I knew, from the beginning, that I did not want a male and so had settled on three females. However, the trio she had together did not stand out to me. I didn't feel a connection with them. But, the pair of females she had instantly drew me in. And, while I know a trio may have been best, I opted for the two females as they seemed the most alert and active. And, they are also very bonded to one another.

I have fostered mice, but have never had any of my own. And, truth be told, until recently, I've not wanted mice. Actually, to be fair, I've not wanted to adopt any new pets. But, the time seemed right and I jumped at this opportunity. I guess my 40 gallon tank was just itching to be filled...

My two girls are young -- about 6 weeks old or so. They are both white with black spots. And, even though you can tell they came from the same litter, their markings make it easy (for me, at least) to differentiate who is who. Oh, and are they cute! I love them already! They are both very sweet and like being handled. I've already held them both and, when I put my hand into their tank, they run up to me and sniff my hand and even skitter across it. They seem to be so trusting. So far, one of them is definitely more adventurous, but both are active. They're constantly running and playing. And, they love their new tank and set-up! The wheel is already being put to good use! They've also made a nice nest for themselves in their hideout and have eaten and drank water. In short, they're acclimating very well. And, of course, I'm smitten
.

I was set on naming them Fig and Olive until I saw them. I've now changed my mind and have named them Phoebe and Piper. I am going to try to get some pictures if the lighting is decent in the next couple of days -- I can't wait to show them off! As always, I'm a bit nervous since they're new to me and I worry about whether they'll remain healthy and happy. But, so far, we're off to a good start. Hopefully, I'll get some pics up soon, but I just wanted to share in my excitement this evening. They really are cute. And, I really am excited. Yay!

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I adopted Phoebe and Piper. Time sure does fly when you're having fun! And, it's definitely been very, very fun since they came home to live with me!

The girls are the best mice I could have asked for. They were friendly from the get go, but they've become more tame as time has passed. Both will come to me and eat treats from my hand and they'll each climb onto my hand and snuggle in for some pets. They're wildly enthusiastic about life and are always running around -- these little critters never stop! I had initially thought that Phoebe was the more active and outgoing of the two, but, as time has gone by, Piper has proven herself to be quite the little investigator (and instigator). She is always fixing to find trouble. And, sadly, Piper will put her in her place when she goes too far. Thus, she has a couple of small scratches on her face, but they're being treated and it's nothing that can't be handled.

Phoebe and Piper are big fans of their wheel and are always running, jumping, and playing. They have a number of houses and huts in their cage to cuddle in, but they prefer to be out in the open. So, instead, their wheel also serves as a nest and they bring their bedding up onto the wheel to sleep. It's very cute, but not so practical. They have tons of chew blocks, sticks, and toys to play with and they're especially fond of paper towel and toilet paper tubes. And, don't forget about the treats! They are definite food mongers and are always looking for the next best treat. So far, they seem healthy and happy. And, that makes me very happy. They're my first pet mice and I am really enjoying every minute of having them be a part of my life!

I know I owe everyone pictures, but it's been difficult to get photos. They are always on the go and my cell phone doesn't take great pictures of still objects let alone moving targets! But, my camera should be back any day now and I'll be sure to get some pics then. Until then, I hope this quick update will do. Again, I can't believe it's coming up on a month. It feels like just yesterday that I brought the girls home. I hope to have as long as possible with my little critters and so I am doing all that I can to ensure that they have the best life possible. While I've always had small animals, this has been a learning experience -- one that I'm very grateful and thankful for. Who knew I'd fall in love with a pair of mice? I sure didn't, but I'm sure glad I did.

Anyway, that's all for the update. I definitely need to get some pictures of everyone (the small critters, the cats, and dogs, and the bird alike). Until then, though, I just wanted to check in and share how happy I am with my mousies. They're pretty darn terrific

I'm glad they are good friends with each other
I gotta ask, when are you going to add Prue or Paige?

I didn't even think of the television show Charmed when I named Phoebe and Piper. It's been ages since I've seen that show, but subconsciously I must have remembered it as I thought the two names went well with one another. How funny!

But, no matter how coincidental it is, I am not going to be adding a Prue or a Paige anytime soon. I just had to take in a trio of Eastern American Toads that could not be released back into the wild due to mild injuries (my mother's dog brought a mouthful of toads in the house -- one lost its leg and the others were a bit beat up, but will all be okay so long as they're kept as pets) and I'm now at my limit. So, no more pets for me for a while. I've got my hands full between the cats, dogs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, a cockatiel, and, now, toads. I wouldn't trade it for the world and I'm thankful to have the time, space, and finances to care for everyone, but I know my limit and I couldn't, in good faith, add anything to my already bustling house.

But, I digress. The Charmed thing is very funny. But, now I can't take credit for my adorable name choices
. Oh well, such is life...

What is it with dogs and toads?
They taste bad, make dogs foam like crazy, don't really do much once caught, yet most dogs adore terrorizing them.

Bless you for taking them in, most folks don't care much for toads.

And I'll bet you have the happist mice, 40 gallon tank all to themselves!

OH you have a zoo in your hands huh. Poor toads.
good luck with all of them.

Say is it possible to get mice spayed or neutered like you would to cats and dogs?
