I recently had to move with my two cats into my parents home. Both cats are female, both about 3 years old. I have a siamese mix and a maincoon. I did what I could during the actual move to make it comfortable for them. The packing unnerved them, especially when the pictures were being taken off the wall. The day of the move, I left them in my bathroom of the old apartment. We moved all my stuff to storage, then went to my new room and set up my bed with my blankets, their food and dishes, their bed, and laid down a few blankets that had not been washed and were full of the scents from the old house.
My parents have a little terrier. I had both cats in carriers and brought them in the house. I showed them to the dog (still in their carriers). The Maincoon hissed and threw a fit, the Siamese sniffed noses with the dog and then was not bothered after that.
My parents are sensitive to the cats needs. The dog has recently lost his doggie playmate when she died of liver failure. He has been really lonely for the past several weeks. He seems to want to "play" with the cats, so my parents put in in a pen when he is in the living room, or he sits in my dads lap where my dad can make sure he does not chase he kitties.
The cats have been hanging out in my bedroom on my bed. It's really high and the dog is a fat little thing that can't jump that high. So they feel pretty safe there. Today I left the door open so they could mosey out if they wanted to. The dog is locked up at night, so they have free roam of the house at night.
Last night I went to bed and my furry babies curled up on the bed with me, showing no apparent stress. Then at 3 am, the Siamese woke me up. She was making this blood curdling cry. I can only think of it as cryinig, like a distressed baby, but more shrill. It's not a usual sound for her, and in fact, I have never heard it before. I figured she was scared so I picked her up, cuddled her, stroked her and chatted with her. then she would want down. I would put her down and she would start in all over again. I thought then that maybe she forgot where her food dish was so I took her in there. Nope, wasn't that. She would not stop and this went on for over an hour. Finally I put her in her kitty cage after watching her use the litter box. I put a bit of water and food in the box, covered it with a blanket, and crawled back in bed. She continued to cry for another 15 minutes then quieted down. Now, tonight, she is at it again. I have no idea what the heck to do.
During the day and evening she is fine. She peeked out of the room today in search of me and "risked" walking by the dog to come sit by me on the couch. She is not slinking, like I expected. Rather, she is walking upright with her tail straight up in the air, like she does when she is pleased with herself.
I know it's the move that has her so upset. But I am wondering what I can do to get her to not cry that way. I can't stand listening to it. Thanks.
