Vibes and prayers for Local Family

Please pray for a local family. This happened a couple of blocks from where I live. The church they had the car wash at was my church. They are supposed to be having another car wash this morning. It is hard when a nine year old loses his life due to someone who drives too fast in alley ways.

Here is the story....

I am so sorry for this family, and I would never say this to them -- but for heaven's sake, an apartment parking lot is not a place for kids to play!

Yes, we should all be extra careful in apartment parking lots, because there are so many parents who can't or won't teach their kids to stay where it's safe. But I'm also sorry for the driver, who is no doubt in anguish, too. Yes, the driver was speeding -- but at least he was where he belonged. The child was not. Why on earth would any parent send a kid in a go-cart to play where two-ton vehicles drive?

I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone... but this poor boy's parents put him in harm's way. No doubt their intentions were the best, and I am sorry for their pain, but... they sent that poor boy out to play in what is essentially a street.

I met the mother today when we were working the car wash. I took her and several of her family members over to the fellowship hall where there were pictures of the past few years of Vacation Bible School. She was really thankful for that.

My heart goes out to her. She kept thanking us for volunteering. Even the pastor of our church was out there washing cars and such.

As for children playing in apartment complex alley ways and such, where are they supposed to play? When I was a child, we played in the street. People need to drive slowly while in a driveway or alley. And pay attention. People yelled at him to slow down before he hit DJ. I am just thankful that he didn't suffer.

You're so sweet to comfort the mother that way... I can't imagine what she's going through now. And you're right, of course -- people do drive much too fast in parking lots and driveways and alleys, and most everywhere else, too. But sometimes even the most cautious driving would not prevent a tragedy... and in any case, we can't possibly control the behavior of every driver. All we can do is keep our kids out of the way.

Goodness that's so tragic and sad...
I agree people need to slow down... Apartment complexes are full of kids and people need to pay close attention. God, I pay so much attention for cats, dogs, squirrels and bird even before I start driving! Here in the alley next to my building there are always kids on their skate boards and playing ball. It is much safer than on the streets and somewhere their parents can keep a close eye on them.
IMHO we can't raise children overprotected inside of our apartments and not let them do anything because something one day might happen. Those kids need to be ready for the World. They need to play, enjoy life, have relationships, etc... As safely as possible, but they do need to....
IMHO it is common sense, just like we pay extra attention while driving around schools, to do the same, and even more so when driving through apartment complexes parking lots and alleyways. There are always kids around, especially during summertime....
There are no words to explain how tragic this situation really is, and how sorry I am for the parents... for them... RIP little D.J.

I'm so sorry for the family. My heart goes out to them. That poor mom.

When we were kids, if my dad found me out in the street at 9 years old, I wouldn't have been sitting down for awhile!

I agree that drivers need to keep aware, but parents need to realize that playing in the street is not ideal.

In our area, when developers build apartment complexes, condos, etc. they are required to create a common space that can be used by everyone who lives in the buildings. In fact, it's a requirement in our land development ordinances. There is no need for children to be playing in the parking lot.
