Hi Everyone -

Any tips or tricks to getting liquid medicine (via a syringe) actually into a cat's mouth and having them swallow, LOL!?

The vet thought it would be easier to have the liquid than a pill, but now I"m not so sure!

This is day 2 (of 7 that we'll have to do) where I have gotten it all over the cat, me, the floor, etc.. It stinks like heck, so I don't blame my baby for objecting (although she could be a little less dramatic and violent about it!)

The poor dear is still holding a grudge against me for this morning's dosage, so I'm hoping maybe with a better method, maybe this won't be so bad.

Talking gently all the while, I get her positioned between my legs so she can't squirm backwards away from me, then open the mouth, insert syringe, close mouth (cat is NOT happy at this point), encourage swallowing with lots of head and face rubs (usually loves this but now she's pissed). She sounds like she finally swallows, then just becomes very still (to get more head rubs). I let her go after some time and she appears to calm down. Then, she takes off and spews out as much of the medicine as possible along the way. Then goes off to sulk. (sigh.)

Thanks!

Oh my .....LOL. I tried this way with my two girls and it doesn't work.

What works for them is to actually sit them in my lap with their front paws over my left arm and their but in my lap facing away from me..like a baby. Then I prod with the syringe until they open their mouth..at that point their head is usually tilted up....try and get the syringe in as far as I can with out them chocking and press. This usually makes them swallow with the least amount of stuff flying around. If your meds are bitter than they still will shake their head and mine even drool (Yuck) - remember there will always be some loss.

My boy is another story...he rabbit kicks OUCH.

Bottom line don't hesitate..then they know who is in charge and it won't be you and they won't get the meds they need.

Good luck

Thanks!

Getting a bit easier now and the grudge-holding time afterwards is shortening, LOL! Thank goodness this is only for a week!!

I opt for the pills, break them into 4, put them in a pill pocket and they think they are getting a treat - gobble them up.

I have tried them but my boy dosen't like treats of any kind he dosen't even like human food, little mama looks at me like what am I going to do with that and Piper well she might eat it once then not look at it again. You are very lucky for sure if you can use pill pockets!!
