On Monday we had to have Artie's leg amputated. Backstory: when we adopted him from the shelter, they told us that his front left leg was broken when he was turned in and it never set right. As a result, he always walked on his elbow. Unfortunately, Artie never realized he was disabled and was 100% kitten. The arm ended up swelling up and though we tried to get the swelling down for over a month, it became infected and the vet advised amputation.

When researching amputations, I found it helpful to read about other cats' experiences and see photos. So far our experience has been very good. Our vet amputated the leg on Monday morning. The vet had originally planned on performing a forequarter removal (leg and shoulder). Monday morning, he called me and said that really active cats have the tendency to bump the brachial plexus, which is full of nerves and lacks protection after a forequarter removal. This can cause quite a bit of pain. Since he had a chance to witness Artie's crazy energy level, he decided to remove the leg up to the area between the shoulder and elbow, which left ~1 inch of a small stump (really barely noticeable).

Yesterday morning we picked Artie up. He was wearing a cape, which he hated.

I read about other people using baby shirts instead of the capes/cones, and my vet gave his okay on using these. I went out and bought a pack of onesies for newborns at Target. I cut off the bottom part, and tried it on Artie. He was much happier with it than the cape. The larger size (0-3 months) might have worked better for the armhole, which sits slightly high on Artie; but the neck on the 0-3 months would probably be too loose (which would allow him to lick his stitches). After the initial fitting, I cut off the sleeve that his arm slips into (so that side is tank top style), which solved the high armhole problem. Then I sewed up the sleeve that covers his amputation site (so he can’t get to the stitches,). So far, he hasn't been able to get the stitches.

He is on buprenex for the pain and hasn't exhibited any signs of pain. He is confined to a large dog crate until his stitches come out in 10 days (8 days now). His walk is still a bit unsteady on 3 legs, but he is able to walk some and use his litterbox. He is still playful (wrestled in his cage with his stuffed rat)! He purrs when we visit him. He is our sweet boy.

His brother, who is usually very nasty to other cats after they return for the vet, snuck in the room behind me. He ran up the cage and didn't hiss at Artie.

This morning, he slept in the bed next to Artie's crate!

What a great idea with the baby shirt. Poor little trooper, but so happy to see he is getting great care. Heal quick Artie, we're rootin' for ya.

Artie is lucky to have you. I used the baby sleepers on Bijou as well when he had a lump removed from his leg. I just made the bottom end a bit bigger and he had no trouble even using the litter box.

Thank You for posting about your fur baby operation. You have given me some great ideas! my fur baby Gizmo goes in for his front leg leg amputation Wednesday(03/18/2015). He was a stray we found in a abandoned houses yard. He was only 8 weeks old (that was in august 2014) after I took him to the vet I didn't have the heart to turn him in to the shelter cause I knew adoption would probably be hard, So he became part of the family. After 3 infections in less then 6 months. We decided its time to do the surgery. We tried everything, But its apparent there is to much damage and in order for him not to suffer any more, surgery would be the best option.

Artie is so beautiful and I hope he Is recovering great! He looks like he is doing well!

I have 2 dogs and one other cat. So before he has his surgery I will be getting him his own little cage. Just some where he can go to get some peace and quiet. Gizmo has become my lil baby and im so afraid one of the other animals may hurt him after surgery. The cage and onsie idea is fabulous!

Please keep us updated on how Artie is!

Lots of love and prayers for you lil guy.

kimmymay kimmymay That's wonderful of you to adopt Gizmo, especially when you knew he had some health issues. Good luck with his surgery next week. Keep us posted! :vibes:

Artie is doing great and can pretty much do everything his "normal" siblings can do. I do need to monitor his diet a bit more closely. He currently weights a bit more than he should, so we're working on helping him lose weight. We need to make sure he doesn't put too much weight on that front leg, so he doesn't have joint problems as he gets older.

A couple of months ago, I think he may have landed on it a bit too hard or the wrong way and it was a bit tender for a couple of weeks. He didn't jump around quite as much and we carried him around (up and down the stairs and from room to room) so he didn't have to walk around as much, but he seems to have recovered and is back to his normal self.

The downstairs part of our house is all carpeted, which he enjoys quite a bit. The upstairs part of the house is all hardwood floors and can be a bit more difficult for him to navigate (harder for him to get a good grip), so we have area rugs (and runners in the hallways). I'm not a fan of rugs in general (especially with pets), but for amputees it's kind of necessary for their comfort and stability.

He also seems to be a bit more sensitive to the cold (we live in the midwestern part of the U.S.). I've heard other pawrents of amputees also mention that their cats also seem a bit more cold-sensitive. I have a lot of fluffy blankets around the house for Artie to snuggle on (and the other cats are good for that too).

Hoping all goes well with Gizmo (I'm sure it will)!
