Last Thursday I took him in for his rabies vaccine. Since then he has not been his usual playful self. There are flashes but is shows no interest in any toys or chasing after the other cats.
He is eating/drink water and using the litter box.
I find no lumps or anything at injection site.
I first thought it might be the weather as it was warmer and humid over the weekend but nice the past couple of days.

I also wonder if it could be the food? He is eating adult food (merrick before grain) instead of the kitten food. (he is about 4 months old) I have some sample packets of kitten food which I opened one this morning. If this is the reason best kitten food? its hard to feed different foods when you have others cats that eat it as well.
His coat isn't dull but just has no energy.

Any thoughts before I contact the vet clinic?

I tend to lean more towards the rabies shot. My vet wouldn't give the rabies vax to Tumbles last year before he was 6 mos old. I'd call the vet and talk with him/her about your concerns because I think they're legitimate.

As for the food, I would supplement the wet food with a high quality kitten food as well such as Innova EVO cat/kitten or Wellness kitten. Also be sure he has access to dry kitten food at all times. He really does need the extra goodies in kitten food.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Well, the kitties we TNR all get rabies shots when they're really young. The only cat that was lethargic for a few days afterwards was Tuxie (though I wouldn't really know what happens with the ferals, I just know they always come back to eat).

I'd call the vet to ask. I wonder if he picked up a bug from the vet visit? That happened with Lazlo and Shelly.

Thanks for the advice. He likes to go outside (when we are out) and we took a walk around the property and he did follow us around walking at times, running a little bit but then he came in and ate and drank and now he is on the sofa going to doze off.

I will stop at the vets office tomorrow and see if I can speak with a vet.

Yup, I would agree with the above posts....one of my kitties (indoor not feral) was super-lethargic after getting her rabies shot. She was around the same age too. She perked up after a few days though.

Best wishes to your little guy!

Bugsy had such a bad reaction he had to have an emergency home vet visit and a couple of injections (sorry, don't remember what they were) in order to get better (I was on my way to the airport so the vet had to come in). It was really really scary. Granted - Bugsy has reactions to a LOT of stuff....... so I learned: for now on Purevax and nothing else. But anyways, it happens.
He was VERY lethargic, hiding, stopped eating, had a fever, sunken eyes, was bad - zombi-like fir quite a few days.
It is not supposed to last long though.... It's been 6 days since last Thursday - at this point I would be looking at something else.... Does he have any URI symptoms?

No URI symptoms this morning right now he is on kitchen table in a semi sleepy state. He ate this morning as usual though I did open a can of wet which he doesn't usually get and he eat some of that too.

Stopping as I mentioned at vet clinic before work. We are in for some hot (in Wisconsin hot is 90+) starting Sunday for a few days which is going to make all the cats lazy. I don't work Friday so if the need to see him I can bring him in.

I stopped at the vet clinic this morning and spoke with a vet tech. She said if eating/drinking/bathroom duties all ok not to worry. Sometimes they can take a bit of time to recover. She noted in his chart and they will call next week to see if there is improvement. If not I will bring him in.
As a precaution though I do have some KMR and mixed up a bowl and gave it to Nub-e when I got home and he drank a good half of it. Perhaps he isn't eating as much as I thought? I opened some wet and will be giving him some of that too.

After posting this yesterday morning I watched how much he is eating and its really not as much as he used to. So I offered three choices this morning and he wasn't interested. So I mixed some wet and the KMR and syringed into mouth. He took the very well so I will continue this for the next few days. I also was reading some posts about kittens not eating and will run errands later today and pick up some different kinds of moist food. He really hasn't gained much weight since his vaccines 3 weeks ago and of course weighing him on my scale he was less than the vets office. I know this can be difference in scales but I will monitor this as well.
So maybe his lethargy is from not eating enough?
If anyone knows about how much he should be eating esp if I'm going the wet route for a while-a 5.5 oz can/day? I know dry is about 3 oz day.

Generally, kitties should be fed 1 oz food per pound of body weight. Since you're trying to get him to gain weight, you might feed more, offering smaller meals more frequently. Is he teething by any chance?

Perhaps as he is that age. I just know I never had this situation with any of the other cats and I am concerned.

Just something to figure into the mix. Hope he's feeling better soon and back to his normal self.

Me too! I've syringed to me alot of wet food/kmr/water mix into him today. A little too much at once sometimes. I pumped up weight weight by 2 oz in 24 hours! Of course now he is full and doesn't want to look at the food or water dishes. I bought a lot of different kinds of wet food hoping to hit one that he will eat on his own again.

Gail, when you syringe feed, it is best to not dilute the food, especially with water.... as the more you dilute it, the less nutrients you have in the mix, the more you have to feed. Get the proper amount he needs to eat, and divide it into 4-5 meals.
In my experience, the best food to get them eating on their own is dry food. I know people will jump all over me here, but the most important thing IMHO is to get them eating on their own, so bear with me: "Junk" (not so much) dry food.
Go to the store and buy/get a bunch of different small bags of tasty dry foods, in different quality ranges. Put in different bowls and offer to him. Get purina One, Pro plan, Royal Canin, totw, and some best ones. Later when he starts eating you can transition him for a better one. You can also give him wet food, but at least he will be eating on his own.
Hope this helps some

I currently have three types of dry food out for him. At least he is checking them out now where he wasn't before.
I also today bought the syringe that you use so I don't have to dilute the wet so much but its a lot messier! I was mixing before with water and some KMR powder. His weight hasn't gone up as much as it did that 1st 24 hours-he was probably dehydrated. But he hasn't lost any weight at least.
He still goes to the door to be let outside but that isn't doing to happen anytime soon as we are having a big heat/humidity wave for the next week. going outside is a small treat for him.
Tomorrow I am calling the vet's office as soon as it opens and I should be able to drop him off so they can exam him.
He is using the litter box though.

Hi Gail, for that syringe: remove the plunger and put the food, undiluted (ideally mixed in a blender or food processor (so it's very smooth), unless it is A/D, which is ready right off the can) through the top, with a teaspoon. Every time you put a spoon with food in it, tap the syringe tip on a hard surface (plate, for example), so you pack it very well. Once the syringe is full, put the plunger back. It is a lot less messier if you do it this way. Also cut the tip a little bit to make it a tiny bit larger - you want to use the one that's shaped like a cone. The one with the thin tip is better for meds, water, liquids.
If you dilute the food, it will run through the tip and yes, it will be messy..... No need to dilute it - just to blend it to make it smooth.
Now you are ready to go.
