No, of course you're not.
I'm the only one who's NOT upset about it,
! I've been a Netflix customer for more than three years, and always marveled at how inexpensive I thought it was. It's not a shock and not an outrage to me, personally. But I understand that lots & lots of people are upset.

I don't think your the only one that isn't upset by this, certainly wasn't singling you out
. Ive been a Netflix customer for 2 years, and originally signed up because I had to cancel my cable due to a sudden ridiculous increase of almost $20 a month when they offered packages to new customers for $30 less! I felt ripped off and cheated!
I just feel that I haven't seen any improvements on the streaming issues, even the last series I tried to watch was so out of order that I couldn't try and guess how it should be. I saw the ending before I was half way through the series......That upsets me and isn't the first time. I try to report it but get no response and nothing is fixed.
I feel that sudden plan changes and price increases need to be slowly introduced, not suddenly and without anything to offer those who have been long term members. They constantly offer a 30 day free trial for non members, maybe they should do something similar for those dedicated members to introduce this new policy. It would be their time to make improvements so many want, and show good faith to the customers they need to keep.....

Just a thought

Yup, saw this coming, Netflix is now quite officially transitioning out of the DVD mail-shipment business.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=c8Tn8n5CIPk

DVD mail business is now spun off into a separate new company division called Qwikster. I would wager that this is simply brand damage control, as Qwikster investment is likely to be minimal and declining, while Netflix moves into the future with increased investment in a purely digital distribution model.

So while technically Netflix "raised prices" for anyone that was doing mail-shipment, they did actually reduce prices for those that were just using the streaming service by $3.

Netflix reported last week that their customer base erosion was much large than they expected, and there is real concern in the market that they might not survive it. My guess is they will, but with an entirely different customer base.

Are you KIDDING ME?! I'm only on the free trial period and was considering purchasing it but now forget it! Their selection is terrible I can NEVER find the movie I want!!

I'm on the xbox netflix thingy where you don't have to get the dvd you can just instantly watch from there.

Stop N' Shop has a "Red Box".. $1 DVD/Blu Ray per night. I use that when I want to watch a movie and its a block away on my way home from work, so I won't be going out of my way for it. Cheaper than $5 for 2 DVDs, or whatever Netflix is charging these days

They're generally up-to-date on DVDs, and I am happy with their selection. You can also buy select used DVDs for $5 too.

I got an email this morning about them raising their prices, with an "explanation" behind it. I probably will keep them around. We haven't had any problems with Netflix yet. We do watch streaming and Instant quite often now (have been watching "Bones" seasons 1-5 for the last couple months - we'll watch an episode a night, sometimes two. Hoping season 6 pops up on there soon!)

I have a HUGE queue of movies waiting to be shipped - I think I'm up to 97 that I want to see. Until we start having real issues with it, we'll keep them. I do understand though how some people would be upset with it!

In the end, digital distribution is more future proof and more cost effective and allows them to market globally, and their pure digital accounts were ~ 22 million compared to only 2 million for pure hardcopy accounts.

After all, the US population is less than a 20th of the world population they could reach digitally, but w/ hardcopy its difficult and expensive to expand into foreign countries that all need their own offices, their own libraries with appropriately region formatted disks, their own distribution, etc. The license costs and logistics are just so much higher.

The reason I don't have netflix though is that last I checked, their digital library sucked compared to their hardcopy library.

Supposedly that was not by choice, but more due to a battle with the rights holders refusing to license digital copies, or wanting to only distribute digitally themselves and not through netflix. So my guess is that by raising the price of DVD shipment accounts (and then abandoning it into a separate division/site) while simultaneously reducing the price of digital streaming accounts, they were hoping that they'd be able to increase the number of digital subscribers and use that as leverage against the media industry to pressure them into releasing more to them digitally or losing sales.

I think it's an incredibly smart move for them for the long-term business. They're ensuring streaming which is the future stays alive and well, while the DVD mailing is run as a separate entity. I think it still has its place, but they can easily shut it down in the future if needed without affecting the streaming.

They would have different charges from the studios for licensing for DVDs vs streaming, so why charge streaming only customers extra for DVD licensing if that's not what they use? I think they are in a healthy enough state to sacrifice some customers now in return for long-term growth.

I am not upset about the cost of Netflix. What I am upset about is how they have something on streaming then it is gone. I signed up for the streaming service to see Dexter and....Melrose Place. I started with Melrose Place first and now Dexter is not available.

They rotate it around every couple of months. It does suck when you have something planned out, but its nice when you feel like there's nothing left! What kind of tv do you like? I'm more than willing to offer suggestions. I'm pretty much addicted to Netflix.

We went ahead and canceled our dvds because we had one sitting on our entertainment center for 2 months before finally watching... We watch a lot on instant, but havent been getting our monies worth for the dvd's lately.

If I didnt have sattelite and could get high speed internet at my house I would have Netflix instead of tv I would do the online streaming because our mail person is highly unreliable. When I did have Netflix we never had an issue with them and the one time we got a dvd that didnt play I called them and they overnighted a replacement copy of it and I shipped the damaged one back right away. Easy as pie to deal with. Sadly for me the cost of the Netflix and then having limited amounts of data to use per month its cheaper for me to have sattelite than Netflix.

I do personally think it makes more sense business wise to charge seperately for dvds and streaming. But thats me. Its also not shocking that they are pushing the streaming because eventually the dvds will be kinda null and void..just like how eventually everyone will have a smart phone so thats why cell companies are restructuring their data plans and speeds. Its just whats going to happen with time and inevitable.

I made my choice, for now, to stick with DVD, as the one and only thing i had left in my queue was a Brit show they don't offer on streaming. I'm making my way through the remaining season of that, and then I may flat out switch back to streaming...

I think splitting the two services is a mistake, IMHO. I was perfectly happy with having both for an affordable price.

Some here have mentioned having a gaming machine they stream through. I have a Roku box. I get Hulu+, and when I go back to Netflix streaming, I'll have that again as well... I've had Netflix for years now... since they started up, I think. I jumped at it immediately, as there are no late fees. I'll likely drop DVD service once I'm done with the show I'm catching up on. Inspector Lyndley... oof.

I decided to only keep streaming, and the funny thing is I received the last DVD on my list right before this. I have a long list of movies that they just don't offer. So I have streaming only now...
I am not surprised at all that this extreme increase for their base customers is putting a 'dent in their change purse'! I live in NYC and we are constantly side swiped by all kinds of price increases, toll hikes, rent, tax, ticket, power, TV, everything and anything you can think of, they find a way. Currently they are saying the postal service is making cuts and may cut Saturdays out of service, no deliveries on Saturdays! SO this effects how many DVD's you would get a month from Netflix.......it's a big round about with very few exits!

I remember a time where there were no Saturday deliveries and no banks open on Saturdays
