Hairball remedy with allergies?

I'm looking for a hairball treat that I can give a cat with food sensitivities. He doesn't really eat the paste (like petromalt) it needs to be in a treat form. He is on a limited ingredient diet of Duck and Potatoes and does quite well with it, but has hairballs really frequently.

He throws up a huge 4 inch long hairball almost every week. I groom him, but not as often as I should like since he attacks the brush.

So... Ideas?

100% pure vaseline - 3-3.5 CCs, squirt in his mouth with a syringe
About the grooming: Have you tried a grooming glove? That's what I use for my brush-attacker
