Anyone jumping ship from Facebook to Google+?

https://plus.google.com/

They seem to be an overnight success, already hitting the 5 million user mark in a matter of days. Reaction seems very positive, and I am seeing some nice features that give them a heads up on Facebook. Thoughts?

I dont like the idea of everything being linked to my email address. Im guessing since its google you sign up with your gmail account? It already annoyed me that i couldnt change the email address linked to my youtube account, i dont need a social network site stuck to it too.

One social network is more than enough for me. I still can't get used to Facebook and I'm sure I have all of my settings wrong even though they are default.

So I'm not going to even attempt another social network site! lol

I'm on it, and enjoying it, but have no plans to leave facebook. I will use it sparingly as it seems difficult to prevent unwanted contact with old, old, old, old, old, old, OLD (OLD!) gmail contacts I really didn't want to speak to again.

The thing I like about Google+ is the ability to have different social network "groups".

The stuff I share with degenerate friends is not the same as things I share with my boss/coworkers or my Mom and aunt. That is a HUGE plus of, uhm, Plus.

That's for sure! It will definitely give me more freedom to post certain things. Although I don't self-censor TOO much on facebook. When I was debating over accepting my mother's friend request (!!!!) several years ago, the deciding factor was finally, "Well, this is who I am, and if she doesn't like it, that's her problem." But, still, your point stands.

The one thing that really sucks though, is that your account WILL eventually be deleted if you go by a pseudonym.

Google + requires you to use your real name, and it WILL update the profile of the google account it is associated with. Now, you can have multiple google accounts, but plenty of people know me by my alias and I see no benefit to releasing my full name.

Google wants your full name though, as this information is far more valuable $$$ to marketers than various online anonymous aliases.

Absolutely...
Forget it Google... you do not going to give us the ENOUGHT garantee that ANY hacker can steal those datas someday!...

Dana and I are both trying out Google + but so far for me it's only "meh". Maybe I'm just not used to it yet and have to play around with it some more but so far I prefer Facebook 100%.

I've never even heard tell of it until now

Haha I have heard of it but I love facebook and have no problem with it, so I have no need to go searching for something else.

I like the circles and the fact that just about everything is accessible from one page. The "hangout" feature might be useful, too.

I'll have to wait and see how useful Google + will be with advertising my fosters. I have a "Kailie's Foster Kitties" Facebook page that I update daily on how my fosters are doing, adoptions, available kitties, pictures, etc. and it has helped a LOT of my fosters find homes. I have approx. 420 people on that page who help me spread the word to all of THEIR friends with my fosters who need homes. 3 out of Penny's 4 kittens are spoken for this way, and they aren't even 5 weeks old yet.

Just another way for the scammers & online thieves to steal your identity, IMO.

I don't do FB, MySpace, or any other social networking site - and have no desire to. I don't trust any of those sites - especially since I've already had to deal with online identity theft. Keeping in touch via e-mail with my friends & family works just fine by me - and even that's not 100% safe anymore.

I haven't tried it yet. But then Myspace was around for a bit before I tried that. Then I waited a while for Facebook. I'm in no hurry.

Last year we had our high school reunion. Most of it was organized through Facebook. They told us there to be on whatever social networking site is most popular in 10 years because thats most likely how we will find out about it again! I don't really mind that as I was not one who volunteered my time. Very few people did and then people got mad because they didn't know about it till after the fact. I kindly suggested they volunteer for the 20 year.

I really like how the circles allow you to EASILY set up groups. Facebook's privacy settings can be difficult to navigate and I have to always make sure certain people at work can't see my status updates there, as well as photos I'm tagged in. It's really a nightmare.

There are some bits of it that are cludgy, such as I can't figure out how to send a message to another user, without commenting on a post they have already. But I haven't been fiddling for too long.

One funny thing to note, however, is that in my list of people to invite to Google+ was Mark Zuckerberg himself.

going to chak it out

you know, the photography site I am on we have a circle now, we could have a cat site circle too.
And I really love that at the bottom you just hit which circles you want to share with and DONE! PERFECT!

My only issue with that is that I don't like making it THAT easy for just anyone to find me. I've made some great friends on TCS that I talk more with on FB than here; but anyone can join here and then join that and know all our real names, etc. It wasn't something that bothered me too much till I became a parent.

Sarahp has that all figured out. When you click on the box to type whatever you want to share, there's a box underneath that says "+Add circles or people to share with". Put +[person's name], type your message, and hit "Share". They're the only one besides you who sees the message. If you look at your Stream afterwards, you'll see "Limited" beside your name and the time. Click on that, and a pop-up will show who can see the message. It should show you and the person you addressed the message to.

Yeah... same here. if I want to vent about something related to people in one circle, I just don't include that circle (as long as they aren't in the circles I'm posting to).

Neither am I. I like doing certain things on FB... but I like being able to *just* talk on G+

I love that as well. I have a circle in mine for TCS'ers...
I think I'll pass for now. Maybe later but I have to think about it.
One social networking site at a time is enough for me. I already spend waaaaaaay too much time on the computer. I've kind of had it with facebook, though, so I will consider switching. I used to really enjoy myspace. My layout turned out really cool, my music was playing... but then everyone switched to facebook.

All I wanted facebook for was to communicate with people I don't get to see often. Everybody wants to play some silly game or get me to repost something or join a group or whatever.

Maybe google+ will be a better source for the things I want... if everyone I want to communicate with joins.
..,. and something I didn't mention before... some folks are concerned with Google wanting 'real names'

I've had several gmail accounts, and one is linked to G+, for years now... I do NOT use my real name on anything unless I absolutely HAVE to (psycho ex cyberstalker jerk).... none of my gmail/google accounts have my real last name on them... none. unless I have to pay for something, or a site needs my info for account verification stuff (like credit cards, water bill, etc... or mailing things... like TCS Secret Santa, but that's only via the private emails and such), my real name isn't attached to it. Heck, my FB account, LinkedIn, Myspace, etc... none of them have my real name... i use my pen name for some... others... totally fake.

Just because they say your real last name... doesn't mean you need to give it to them... if I had to, man, my ex would have so many ways of tracking me down, I probably wouldn't be alive today... so no, you do NOT need to use your real last name for them.

Right, you just have to use a name that LOOKS real.

My concern is that if I go with a fake name, people I know may deny my friend request inadvertently. So I'm hoping most will recognize my pseudonym as a last name, heh!

I'm not going to put my birth name either.

On one of mine (and on FB), I use a variant of one of my nicknames as part of my last name. I only added an 'i' at the end... if you take that away, you're left with my nickname, which is a mostly aquatic animal that's had several movies made about them...
but that was only because FB was REALLY picky about what I changed my 'name' to on there... with google? feh... it doesn't have to be even realistic looking... man, the aliases I've come up with. they haven't rejected a 'name' yet... and on the account with G+, I'm Amanda P.A. (short for my pen name: Parker Adams, which are family names, but not my real last name)

the account that I get my TCS emails on? the "name" is JoJo and Jack K. With just the initial being acceptable as my last name.... and that one is mild compared to some of the others...
