My cat Friday is 12 years old. We've been treating him for hyperthyroid for about 12 months. We knew that he had kidney disease and started him on KD. 3 months ago, his levels were good enough that our vet didn't want to start him on medication. He hasn't been himself the last couple of days. We went back to the vet today. They did blood work. His kidneys are only functioning at 10%. There isn't much we can do. They gave him fluids and we go back tomorrow and Wednesday for more then a recheck on Thursday. I"m utterly devastated. Friday is one of my best friends. I just don't know what I'll do without him.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I so appreciate that I have a place where I can share my fears and be understood.

Happily, Friday seems to be doing better today. He's getting fluids and they are going to recheck him Thursday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll defy the odds but only if he can defy them with a good quality of life. I love my friend and I'll grieve when he's gone but I don't want to see him suffer either.

I'm so sorry.
I remember how utterly helpless & devastated I felt when I knew that my Maverick's time was getting short. It's something I don't care to go thru again, but sadly, I know I'll have to eventually.

I hope Friday's test results have a better outcome on Thursday!
Just try and cherish the time you have left with him, and know in your heart that when the inevitable comes, you're giving him a wonderful gift by not letting his suffering continue. He will remember your kindness, and love you for it.

I'm so sorry about Friday. It broke my heart when my RB girl Tiger was so sick. She felt much better when she was getting IV fluids regularly. But when it was time for her we knew. It was so hard and I still miss her 8 years later. But I have comfort in knowing we did everything we could for her too. I've always felt that she knew that too. It's just never easy.

Just wanted to let you all know that Friday is doing much, much better. I know we've got a long road ahead of us but it's such a relief to buy some more time and enjoy being with him.

I cannot express how grateful I am for this community and your support. Too many "everyday" people in my life don't understand what I've been going through. You've given me a lot of comfort.

I'm glad to hear Friday is doing better! He's got the best he can hope for with you. It's hard sometimes to put their quality of lives ahead of our own feelings, and you are doing an amazing job of that. Give him lots of cuddles and scritches from TCS!
