Bill had a batch of brownies all mixed up today and the oven wouldn't light! It worked fine, this morning, for the breakfast biscuits. He poked around, in its innards and thinks a thermocouple (
) is broken.

The question now is: do we spend the money to repair a 20-year-old stove or do we buy a new one? Bill is inclined to buy new. I went Websurfing and stoves seem to be pretty high-priced. Some of them were $6,000. For that kind of money, it had better do ALL of the work!

All I want is a standard gas stove, with a self-cleaning oven. Sears has a Frigidaire for $199.99 but it isn't self-cleaning. The most affordable one is $400.00.

I'm off, on Wednesday so we're going to a locally-owned appliance store. They gave us a good deal on our washer and dryer. Maybe we can get a floor model, fairly cheap.

So far out in left field I got lost
I am pulling for the new stove.

I will be getting all new appliances for the kitchen in about a month once we get all of the cabinets and walls finished in my kitchen. I haven't been able to cook for 3 months
In a way that is good and in another way it sucks! I am tired of takeout food(never thought I would say that) and sandwiches.

I agree , get a new Stove . If you repair that old stove , that don't mean it will not brake again and you may end up spending more money into that stove and on the end you will buy a new one any way . I got me a new one last year , a flat top (sp) . I am in love with that stove

Eeeps! $6.000???? Wow...ummmm, does it come with a cook??????

Cindy, yeah...I think you should at least look into getting a new stove. we also did the 'fixing and repairing' on our old one for a few years. Then I finally got fed up and bought the one we have now. Also bought it at Sears. It's a Kenmore, self cleaning convection oven. I just love it. I don't think the convection is that necessary but this stove was on sale so we went for it. Haven't had to fix anything in a while and I just love it!

Oh and...haven't burnt any cookies lately too. To this day I still blame it on the old oven!
Something was definately wrong with it...

For 6 grand, it better do the food shopping and cooking for you, too!

I would see what appliance stores near you have a scratch and dent department. You can sometimes get a real bargain that way. Good luck!

We're going to check Christie's Appliances. They've been in Tucson, for 50 years and we like to keep our business as local as possible,

Let us know what you find! Our oven died this winter...it's avocado green, if that tells you anything!
It's gas & the stovetop still works - we've been debating b/w fixing it or buying a new one, too. It would be nice to have one that's a better color, but we're both recycling nuts - we don't like to contribute to the throwaway culture if we can avoid it. However, we don't want to always be repairing it, either. hmmmmmm, decisions.....

I'm also voting for the new stove! I had a 20 year old washer/dryer pair that broke down 2 times in less then a year and the 2nd time I decided it just wasn't worth putting anymore money into a 20 year old set. Good luck!

You can buy appliance paint and get that stove a make-over. I did that to my refrigerator that was that gold color. It came from the same period as your avacado green one!

my brother just got a flat top stove at an appliance outlet--but it was electric, only $299 tho..

On the other hand, my bf's mom hasn't had an oven (stove works) since hers broke over a year ago, is just using her old toaster oven because she is remodling the house and wants to wait until she gets to the kitchen to buy all new appliances.. But really it's a disaster--she had to butcher a turkey into small pieces to get it to fit in the toaster oven!!

I have a very small toaster oven - it holds a bagel. The turkey breast went into the rotisserie last night.

The worst part of this whole thing - NO BROWNIES!

I vote on buying the new stove! I just updated my Harvest Gold/Avocado Green kitchen over the last year. Replaced the 30 year old linoleum, painted the dark walnut stained cabinets white, replaced the lighting and wallpaper, and finally last week, replaced the counter top and bought a new stove!!!! My new stove is a flat top electic convection and I love it. I actually want to cook once again!
