Hi! I'm new here but hoping I can get some answers
.

I've been feeding my cats Blue Buffalo for about a week and they seem to really like it and I want to continue feeding it. What i'm wondering though is can I change the flavors up? Like I bought the blue finicky because it was on sale, can I change it to something different when this bag runs out? Or do I have to stick with the same kind all the time.

Ok now next question. I went to a cat show today and it seemed like a lot of people there feed their cats Royal Canin, I was wondering if there was a reason for this.

Ok and last, do I have to feed wet food?

Thanks!

You can switch flavors if you like. . .some cats don't tolerate food switches well, some do. You'll know which kind your kitty is soon enough!

Royal Canin and Pro Plan seems to be pretty popular with show people, but I don't really know why. I know Purina has a breeder's program that gives discounts, maybe RC does, too, but whether that's the reason I don't know.

Yes, it's a good idea to give your cat some canned food every day. Cats aren't designed to absorb water from drinking it; their bodies do better at absorbing water from wet food. So canned food helps to keep their kidneys and urinary tracts healthy.

I agree, wet food is excellent for hydration and typically is high in nutrients and low in cheap fillers and carbohydrates (excepting some of the cheapos in gravy junk food wet). Blue recommends feeding a mixed diet, and has feeding suggestions accordingly on their dry food.

I have never had any issues switching wet food, and in fact they get a different flavor after they finish each can. Dry food however its usually a good idea to transition slowly over several days mixing the old with the new, otherwise some can get diarrhea.

Personally, we have one meal of Blue Wilderness Duck and two meals of various wet food brands (whatever is good and on sale) each day. We try not to have fish flavors more than once or twice a week, since too much fish can cause UTIs in some cats, in particular males.

You can, but this depends on the cat a bit to. I have had the finicky feast and indoor variety of blue dry's here... most recommend a slow transition when it comes to dry feeds but i usually don't only feed one brand anyways so my cats are quite used to having access to various types at once.

As for wet that is one i switch often, and usually isn't needed to be transitioned like dry.

As for show cats, yes RC is quite popular.. part of it is because they do breeder programs and fund cat shows.. pro plan isn't done here as often. All my purebred cats(ragdolls) were on royal canin before they were purchased by me.

I have had RC here and honestly cannot complain on the condition of the cats when fed it however my wallet does lol it's extremely pricey... when comparing to other brands, blue, chicken soup, felidae, natural balance and so on. So i opt not to feed it.

I have had my 3 cats on Blue Buffalo for about 3 years now, I have my dog on Blue Buffalo as well, switching flavours is fine like others have mentioned some cats dont like change in flavour, I swore by Blue Buffalo until I went into Petsmart to buy a small bag as I was low on cash and the cats ran out and their 3lb bag was 17.99 I almost had a heart attack their 3lb bags use to be 9.99 and they went up as of May 31, well that really striked a cord with me, I dont want to switch my cats but I want to be able to get a small bag of food for my cats when im strapped for cash til pay day and not have to pay an arm and a leg for a 3lb bag that might I mention is already gone and I bought it on Tuesday of last week a 3lb bag does not feed 3 cats for a week. I know its not Blue Buffalo's fault it is PetSmart's fault as they raised the prices but that is the only place in my area that sell Blue Buffalo, petsmart also only brings in 2 bags per every 2 weeks of my dogs food as well and thats blue buffalo, they said its always on back order, so obviously its a good brand and i want to keep my dog on it as a bag for him lasts me 6 weeks or more.

Dry food usually has a shelf life of years, so its much better to save up a bit and buy the largest bag available... or two if its on sale. There is no personal risk, as Petsmart will take back opened big bags if your cat won't eat it.

The small bags are always just going to mean throwing away money IMO. Check the petsmart tag for price per gram or however they have it listed for that one, its often double for small bags Blue or otherwise. Eek!

Many of the breeders and show people that I know actually have their cats on a Raw diet...

Oh definitely. Even plain ol' Cat Chow (for instance) costs around $2 a pound when you buy the smallest bag, but only about 60 cents a pound when you buy the biggest bag. I know some people who say they can't afford to buy the big bag. . .well, they're going to have to buy that much eventually, might as well buy it all at once and get a huge discount! I can't afford to pay 3 times more for the same food.

Dry food does start to go stale as soon as the bag is opened, but if it's stored properly that can be minimized.

Internet to the rescue:

Works for most bags of various sizes from cat food to bird seed to tater chips.

Doesn't work if the bag has a zip lock, but then you obviously just burp it and pinch. Some store the bag in an additional hardcase sealed container, but honestly I've never had the kitties not finish their dry within a couple minutes even at the end of the bag.

I had a dog that wouldn't eat stale food at all. Before I got a Vittles Vault, she would start to refuse her food about 2 weeks after the bag was opened. With the Vittles Vault, the time increased up to a month. But she just wouldn't eat it after that. She was a big dog and a large bag only lasted her a month, so that worked out OK, but if the time needed to be extended I think that keeping the food in the original bag, well clipped, only opening it once a week or so to refill a smaller container, would have worked.
