my orphan...(4.5 weeks old) shivers...it is only when I let her out for her once a day supervised explore walk around, or after I give her a (warm) washcloth bath. She never shivers in her box or when she is sleeping.

Normal, or concerning....

Normal. Young kittens cannot generate their own heat well. Putting a wrapped hot water bottle in her bed so that she can curl up next to it is a good idea.
I always put a heater in the room and keep it a few degrees warmer, especially when you are bathing her.
Its very important not to let her temp drop, if it stays low, it could be life threatening.

You can also use a rice sock. Just pour some raw rice in an old sock & tie off. Then, warm it up in the microwave and place under a towel next to the kitty.

Good advices about this extra warmth, esp after bathing.

I wonder if this shivering when taking walks may be because of excitement.
