Hopeful Adoption! And color/genetic question..

So.. a few of you might recall that I've been wanting to adopt a deaf kitty.

A Hearing Impaired kitty came up in conversation.. not sure if she's fully deaf or partially yet. She's 4 months old.

Shelter says she's a "white tabby".. but isn't she a form of calico? And someone said that white/mostly white calicos tend to be deaf.. I've heard white cat/blue eyes are generally deaf? She has gold eyes it seems.

I'm going to meet this cutie tonight after work. Can't wait and hopefully a match!

Oh, I need name ideas! All famous painters I adore are males. This is a lil girl.. though I am thinking Van Gogh anyway, lol.

I would just say she's white with Tabby spots. She's cute!!

It's solid white cats (with the masking white gene) with blue eyes that are more likely to be deaf, also some solid whites with odd eyes may be deaf, usually just the other ear from the blue eye's side. Even a tiny spot of color usually eliminates the deafness related to masking white gene.

I've never heard of calicos being more prone to genetic deafness??

I'm not good with the terms that determine the actual pattern when it comes to whites as they depend from the amount of white, but I can say she is either a brown tabby (spotted, mackerel, classic, can't tell because the pattern isn't showing in the pics) van, harlequin or bicolor. Without seeing the whole coat I'd say brown tabby harlequin. I can't see any red in her, but if she does have it, then she's a torbie harlequin, or more officially brown tortoiseshell tabby harlequin. Not a calico.

(Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not very familiar with whites).

She's adorable

With calicos, you would have orange patches in addition to the brown tabby ones.

Here is Much (RIP) showing her orange patch.

And Lucy shows her patches too.

She may not be deaf due to genetic reasons. Our Flowerbelle is most likely deaf from untreated infection as a baby kitty. (She's all white with sea green eyes).

I hope all goes well for you and little cutie girl tonight!

Well, I met this lil cutie earlier. She purrs louder than Monet!

The foster mom said she's deaf in one ear. The kit doesn't react much to noises which makes them believe she's hearing impaired.

She's mostly white with a few small patches.. the patch on her head has the markings of a tabby.. and her tail is pretty much a typical tabby's tail, striped and brownish-grey. She's adorable!!

I filled out an application for her. I will find out tomorrow if I am accepted.. if I am, then she'll be coming home saturday morning.

Congrats!!!! You & Monet will be so happy!

Go for Van Gogh - I was lucky and got 2 boys out of the litter I was adopting from, but even if I'd had a girl (or both girls!) I'd still have named them Simon & Garfunkel.

Man, I am too excited to get the phone call to say I'm officially the new meowmy, that I couldn't sleep a wink last night! (I'd better be the new meowmy!)

I was up trying to think of good girl cat names. I can't think of any!! I only came up with boy names. My dad suggested Picassa, female version of Picasso, lol.

Any ideas? Unique, artsy type of names?

Congratulations, she is a darling.

Lucy's original name was Paloma after Picasso's daughter who did jewelry and clothing design. It didn't fit my Lucy, but I think it would be perfect for your girl.

Me either, lol .... hopefully, you find a name that is right for her. It may take a bit to look through the artists to see what appeals to you.

It's official, she's coming home tomorrow! whoo!

My mom suggested Pyewacket from a comedy called "Bell, Book and Candle" It's about a witch who had a black cat, and she can't cast a spell without the cat. The cat would keep running away. Sounds like a cute story!

Told my 5 year old niece about the cat, she's excited and I told her to think of some names to help me out. You never know!

Awwww... what a cutie! Congrats!
Not an artist, but the inspiration for one! What about Mona Lisa?
Monet and Mona Lisa or Monalisa

Congrtulations!

She is gorgeous, and I love the name Picasso, for boy or girl. Maybe you can give her a "girly" nickname like Penny or Sassy or something...
I actually really liked Picassa.
:woohoo How EXCITING!

I think the name "Pyewacket" is really cute - but I wouldn't want to name my cat after one that kept running away! (If they don't name themselves, in our experience, they grow into their names. ).

I, too, think Picassa is really cute! And the obvious nickname "Pica" is also super cute!

HAVE FUN!

And remember - we're here for any questions about their intros along the way.

thank you I already got the name tag made up as Picasso, lol. The tag making machine is EXPENSIVE now! 8 bucks?! Yikes.

Picasso should be arriving in an hour. I keep telling Monet that his little sister is coming.. a pathetic attempt to "prepare" him, lol.
I really believe it helps! And just keep telling him he'll always be your #1 - and she'll just be all for him.
Congratulations!
I'm so excited for you, Monet & Picasso. She's a real cutie.

Sending lots of good intro

I love the name Picassa and it really seems to fit that sweetheart! She's really pretty.
