Many of you have read about Tabitha, our little 6-week old stray baby. We brought her home from the neighbor early Sunday evening and she had her first vet appt on Tuesday evening. She has ear mites....really bad ear mites. The vet is worried that they may have perforated her right ear drum and that she may end up deaf in that ear. He cleaned her ears out very, very well and then placed a drop of Otomite Plus in each ear. The gunk he took out of that baby's ear! He told us to treat her (and the rest of the cats in the house) once a week for the next month. And that within 3-4 days, we'd see an improvement in her wobbling.

If anything, she's gotten worse. She keeps her head tilted down and to the right all the time. She's very wobbly and will even walk around in circles to the right. Eventually Tabby does get to where she wants to go, but it's very difficult for her. She can jump up to the kitchen chair that we have in the computer room....I'm amazed that she can even do that. It's hard for her to jump back down.

It's really bad when she's been lying down for a nap. When she first tries to get up, she's all over the place. And last night while she was eating, she went head first into her food. I picked her up and cleaned her up and she started eating again.

She's using the litterbox, both peeing and pooping. She's trying to be active, but it's difficult. I'm trying to teach her how to play, but again, when she can't maintain balance, it's hard. She's most content just to lie in my arms and purr and purr, but we can't do that all day.

She's been staying in the computer room in a large cage, although she pretty much has the run of the whole room now. The only time she's in the cage is during the night. Now that she has tested negative for feline leuk, etc. I had her in the living room last night for awhile, thinking that maybe she could move better on carpet than on the wood floor in the computer room. But she still goes in circles and she's really, really wobbly.

Will this pass? Is she going to be OK? Tomorrow (Friday) will be the third day that she's had cleaner ears and her first mite treatment. What else can we do for her? Are we going to lose her?

UPDATE: I just called the vet and we have another appt for tonight (Thursday) at 6:00. I don't know if I'm worrying unnecessarily or what, but I think she needs to be rechecked.

Any advice?

my cat had ear mites when i first got him too, but the case wasn't as severe as yours i think. i don't know what advice to give; it seems you're doing everything you can. with my cat we cleaned his ears with a special medicine once every 2 days and the mites were gone in a month. hope your kitty gets well soon.
