Hi, I am new to this site. My reason for joining is to learn as much as I can about cats. However, there is a more important reason for me being here.

My cat, June.

Here is the story:

Early Monday morning I found a HUGE pile of puke that consisted of her food. She acted very weird throughout the day, not moving off of the bed. This happened 2 times before during the 2 years I have had her (threw up and seemed dull for 24 hours) The first time it happened was Christmas Eve and she was better the next day. The second time was a few weeks ago. Her symptoms lasted about a day so I thought it would pass. I figured she ate too fast or something like that.

Monday night I found a large puddle of bile in the bedroom below the bed. My plan was to take her to the vet Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning, June seems to be shaking/twitching and her back legs are very week. She is mildly panting. I immediately take her to the vet. She is spending the night. Her x-rays do not show any obstruction. Since strings do not show up in x-rays, we are not completely ruling them out. However, it does not go along with her symptoms. The vet also said she is losing sight in her left eye. She is in IVs and is getting blood work done. The results will be in tomorrow. If the blood work fails to show any viral diseases, the vet believes there is something going on in her brain and I will have to see a specialist.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I am so upset and trying to figure out what could be wrong with my little girl. I am praying to God that this is something that can be treated. She is the sweetest cat ever. She is truly one of a kind in so many ways.

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I really look forward to being a part of this forum. Please keep June in your prayers.

Thanks for reading.

How old is she? It sounds she might had a stroke? A lot of cats recover from it just fine - don't lose hope

She is 2. How does something like that happen? Is that normal for a 2yo cat?

Not that I know of... happens more often in older cats. Any chance she could gotten to something toxic? Is she inside only? Do you have plants in your house? Anything at all she could eaten?

I really don't think there is a chance she could have gotten into anything. She is an indoor only cat. Would something show up in an x-ray if she ate something toxic? How can I find that out for sure? Will it show in her blood tests? Sorry for all the questions... I am so upset and worried.

I was thinking something with her kidneys, but that's not common in young cats, so I hope the doctor can figure out what's going on.

The neurology issue makes sense to me. I'm assuming the meezer has been tested for diabetes etc. The loss of eye sight is why I asked about the diabetes. Another poster suggested a stroke which is very possible as well. Both of those conditions are treatable from her health right now as you described it.

Glad to have you in the forum and I'm sending vibes. Please try to keep us posted.

I called the vet this morning and June is in kidney failure. She also has an infection so we don't know what caused what... She is responding to the IVs and is perking up a bit today.. No more twitching and she seems to be able to stand (for a short time at least). She is still on IVs and is now on antibiotics.

She also has a very high red blood cell count which is also rare.. It may be due to the infection or could also be a rare disease. The vet is thinking it is linked to the infection and dehydration.

She is able to concentrate her urine just fine which doesn't really go along with how poor her blood tests came out... maybe that is a good sign.

June is going to stay at the vet's office for a few more days. We will have to wait and see how everything is once the infection is fought off (if she can fight it off) I don't know much about kidney disease or kidney infections.... I will know more about June later this afternoon but I wont know if it is kidney disease yet.

She is only 2 years old. I can't believe any of this :,(

Does anyone know anything about kidney failure/disease/treatment/experience?

PLEASE KEEP JUNE IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.

Acute renal failure like this is usually caused by ingesting toxins or toxins built up in the system from infection or disease. If she responds to the fluid treatment and her kidneys are flushed out and she beats the infection, she'll likely need to be on a special food diet for the rest of her life. Renal failure is monitored by semi-annual urinalysis and blood checks to make sure everything is in balance. There's a lot of information out there. You can start by reading Tonya's site, http://www.felinecrf.org/holistic_treatments.htm#SEB and by joining the CRF Yahoo group, http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-CRF-Support/ .

Please keep us posted on her progress. If possible, get a copy of her bloodwork from the vet so we can see her numbers.

Thanks. Here are the numbers before the IVs. They will re-check in a couple of days.

BUN: 127

Creatinine: 6.3

Phosphorus: 18.7

She threw up a little bit today and started twitching/shaking a little bit. She did not want to eat any food they gave her. However, it hasn't even been 24 hours yet. There is still hope.

The twitching/shaking is caused by too many toxins in the bloodstream. The kidneys filter those things out and since her kidneys aren't working properly, the toxins build up. If you can stand it and if your vet thinks it wouldn't be too stressful for your kitty, you might want to visit her and see if she'll eat for you. Also, are they giving her something to settle her stomach? She probably has indigestion and kitties don't want to eat when they've got that.

More reading...at the top of the health forum is a sticky thread on Chronic Renal Failure. LOTS of great info there.

I went to visit her and brought meat and squash baby food that my vet approved. Someone on a support forum for feline kidney failure recommended it. She responded well and did not spit it out.. She actually seemed to enjoy it. She is on Pecid for her stomach.

Please keep us posted on June's situation. I hope there is something that can be done for her. I have no experience with renal failure so I can't offer any help or advice but Stephanie posted some links for you.

Awesome!! Glad she responded to you and to the food. Do you know when they'll test her numbers again?

I will get new test results in tomorrow morning.

I was there today feeding her again and she seems to be doing a lot better. She was really happy to see me and was purring... so that is good news.
