When we lost power a few days ago, we found out the starter that switches the power from electric to propane was broken. Not a big problem. Power seemed to be working fine, we made ice in the freezer two nights ago.

Last night... no ice.

But the "check" light wasn't on (meaning it didn't think there was a problem with the electric).

Thank goodness we're friends with the RV repair guy. He flew over here despite it being the 4th holiday.

He confirmed - nothing wrong with the electric. Could be problem with circulation of the coolant. He banged on it all over. Sometimes if there's a "particle of something" in there, it can get stuck. That may be all it takes.

If not.... we either have to replace the cooling unit (about $900) or the entire fridge (about $2000). (Yes, RV fridges are far more expensive than home fridges).

We can't afford either solution.

So a few vibes that it was just the circulation and the banging worked!

Vibes for you, Laurie!!!! I was getting nervous last night as there was a huge storm and the lights flicked about once every five minutes or so for an hour. If they go out, I can't afford to replace the food in my fridge, lol! I hope your repair-guy friend was able to bang the problem out of the fridge -
good luck!

Many RV owners are going over to a straight electric fridge if the twin-power one dies. You can get one for a good deal less than $500 that will fit in the space the RV fridge was in, and it's a good deal safer and more dependable.

OH no, Laurie..... I certainly hope the banging got the circulation going again.
I had no idea RV fridges were so darn expensive.
. I really hope it doesn't come to that. It is really tough when these things go wrong and need replacing
Hope you have ice tonight

Hey, Laurie, just a thought and Larry just mentioned this. Could you look into Craig's list or Ebay if it comes to that? Or call some RV dealers and see if they know of any place to get a used one or refurbished fridges.
You may have already thought of this anyway
. for ice

Thanks for the vibes! Unfortunately, no one was able to bang any sense into the fridge.

So a bunch of our frozen stuff is now in someone else's freezer. We'll be enjoying some melted ice cream later (at least it's still cold). Our fridge is now an old-fashioned ice-box, and I'm wondering how many things will actually survive LOL.

We're looking into alternatives.... With the amount the power goes out here, I doubt very much we'd consider a non 2-way alternative. Used/refurbished, definitely!

Sorry the fridge couldn't get any sense knocked into it
. Packing it with ice bags will help a lot but I am bummed you guys have to deal with this. I hope you find a used or refurbished one quickly. There might be quite a few nice ones out there to choose from. Glad you had a friend to take some of the frozen goods. I guess you and Gary will be eating all night long to finish up the food and ice cream!!

It's a sweet thought, Carol, but we'd have to go shopping every day or two with the amount of stuff it holds.
Our 7.7cu fridge isn't "big," but it keeps us for a week or two and holds all our condiments and juices, and 40 lbs. of frozen stuff.

We found a refurbished replacement (they no longer even make our model of fridge) that is costing us only an arm, not an arm and a leg.
There was, of course, a mix-up in the shipment - THANKFULLY they sent a confirm so we caught it before it got on the truck. It's coming from Texas. HOPEFULLY it'll be here Tuesday (and hopefully it works without a problem, and the guy who is going to help us will be able to get it hooked up without problem. You don't just plug these things in). OH - and as it doesn't come with the door panels (the doors, but they're just metal frames. Hopefully the panels we have will fit properly).

I'm sorry to hear about your fridge!! I hope the replacement one works out for you!

This is the reason I refuse to buy a house or condo. I don't have to worry about things malfunctioning. I just have to pick up the phone and report it. I know I pay more in rent than most people do for mortgages, but I figure I'm buying peace of mind, so I don't mind.
