My cats eat in the kitchen of our house in a quiet corner next to which they have their water, litter tray etc. However, this year I have never seen so many flies nor have I ever experienced having flies around the cat food before. This is changed twice a day so is fresh - can anyone give me a prcatical idea that can stop this as its driving us nuts. The litter box is clean as being summer, the cats hardly ever use it. The flies then are getting into my lounge and dining room. Knowing what flies are like and the infections that they carry - I am keeping the food as fresh as I can but am out of ideas.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try putting the cat food away after the cats eat? Try to find where the the flies are coming in. A big fly swater and about 10 minutes does wonders...LOL. I have 3 cats.....two hunt down the flies and eat them. Good luck!

Movin' on up!
my patio is swarming with the nasty things. We hang fly strips out there and that keeps them pretty well under control.

Hmmmm I've never had that problem but I feel for ya! Do you use dry food or wet? Have you seen those sticky fly strips you can hang from your ceiling? They attact the flies and when they fly on them they stick to it and can't get off.

Have both wet and dry down for them both - Brandy tends to eat the dry as this year he had to have all his teeth out bar 4, he seems to prefer it. Vicki eats more of the wet stuff, although for a small cat afterwards - she stinks!!!!
We feed them Whiskas - they love it.

have not tried the fly strips yet =- I have though become a dab hand with a damp cloth and seem to be able to get a fly on a wall from more than 20 feet!! Maybe I have a career in baseball!!!!!

I was thinking that the wet food probably attracts more flies. Even though you change it a couple times a day maybe if you pick it up after they eat and clean the dish?? I don't know, I'm just trying to throw ideas out there.

wet food should not be left down more than 20 mins....

I reccommend switching to fixed feeding 2x a day, and store food in air-tight container.

also maybe change the food location, it may help the fly situation, and |I wouldn't kepe the litter box near the food, gats don't usually like to eat near where they go potty...

just suggestions ofcourse everyone does what is best for them...
