Neutered Male Cat Moaning at All Hours

Thread Starter
I have an adult neutered male orange tabby cat that I picked up as an adult stray probably 4-5 years ago, so I would assume he is 6+ years old. He is your average lazy lap cat, not very playful, but extremely affectionate to friends and strangers alike. He is probably the most loving and outgoing cat I have ever had.

Long story short I moved into an apartment with my girlfriend and her younger more energetic adult cat last October. Three weeks ago my girlfriend of six years walked out on us and took his slightly annoying, but beloved playmate with him.

Since then, he randomly moans/calls at all time of day, but it extremely frustrating when he wakes me up at the wee hours of the morning. I can usually snap him out of it by calling him and he comes running and jumps in bed with me, but I really need to get a good nights sleep.

I work 60-80 hours a week, so he is often left alone in the apartment without much to do. I was thinking about getting a kitten to keep him company and occupied when I am away from home, but haven't made that decision yet.

Any ideas on how I can get him to stop the behavior?

Thanks,
A red eyed, sleep deprived, cat lover...

Another companion might work - but, why a kitten?

There are some wonderful adult cats needing a home at any rescue center that might be just right for a companion for your lonely guy.

If you do decide to get another cat, and you don't have ideas of how to introduce the cats, check out this website - in the Behavior Forum for help.

He is probably deeply missing his kitty and human friend. Getting him a kitten to keep him company may help relieve his boredom, but I'm not sure it will instantly replace the ones he lost.

Also, I'm so sorry about the end of your relationship... :[ *hugs*

I too second an adult cat of same age as the playmate was. Kitten is too much for both of you if you need sleep and quiet time . Take it from someone who just adopted two kittens!

I also would recommend that you get a cat of similar age and activity level (a cat 4-6 years of age) as a playmate for him. I'm sure he's missing the companionship. However, you might want to have him checked out by a vet just to rule out any medical problems first.

My male cat did the same thing after I lost my female cat in November. He would moan loudly at all hours of the night for months. He finally stopped after we got another kitten (Lucy) four weeks ago. We weren't planning to get a kitten, but Lucy was going to get put to sleep and we couldn't let that happen. Ever since Lucy entered our lives, he hasn't moaned once. I think he just really missed his friend.

I would recommend getting a cat his age that is male. Males tend to get along better with other males.

From my friend's experience, it doesn't even matter if the cat LIKES his new roommate, they can still generally keep each other occupied enough (even if its just "stay away from my stuff intruder" behavior) to keep them from getting so bored from lack of stimulation that they start crying out.

A kitten would be way more fun for you IMO, and you can actually mold the behavior of a kitten quite a bit and they are adaptable... but the kitten would probably annoy the heck out of your cat.

If going the kitten route, I would go for an older kitten at least, say 9 months+ so it will be a little more similar size and activity wise than a spastic little 4 month old.
