Back story to this book length report -

So Mist, my 16 year old arthritic, diabetic-controlled-with-diet lady had her teeth cleaned last Tuesday. Ate fine Tuesday night, fairly well on Wednesday morning. Stopped eating Wednesday afternoon, vomiting, soft stool. No idea if this is coincidence or causality.

Off to vet Thursday morning. Her glucose is acceptable, kidney value on the high side but she's dehydrated. Sub-Q fluids and something to settle her tummy.

Back on Friday morning. Not eating, vomiting, and now it is diarrhea. Sub-Q fluids, B12 to - hopefully - perk up her appetite. If necessary, force feed her twice a day. Gave me some Supplical (Nutrical type goo in a squeeze tube.)

Vet is off to State College PA on Friday afternoon to watch her horse compete in a hunter / jumper show. I have her cell phone number and can call, also someone will be at the hospital on Saturday morning if Mist needs more fluids.

Force feed and she promptly vomits.

I'm trying an assortment of wet food, tuna juice, baby chicken. No good.

In desperation I tried her on the dry food Mr. Poe and Domino get along with their wet food. She eats. It's good, she's eating. It's bad, she needs a low carb diet.

On Saturday my husband went to the vet hospital and got a bag of fluids and some needles, to cover us for Sunday & Monday, which is the Glorious Fourth. I never gave sub-Q fluids before but I've watched enough times. Easy peasy, and Mist is a very good sweet girl about all this when I gave her fluids on Saturday.

Today, Sunday, I went to Pet Valu and poured out my tale of woe to Stacy, who also happens to be a vet tech. She gave me three sample bags of dry food, gave me a bag of freeze-dried chicken treats, and discounted two cans of Weruva poultry from their sticker price of $1.29 / can.

Came home, put down a spoonful of the Weruva turkey - and she ate! I'm doing the happy dance, can you see me twirling round and round?

I'll wait a bit then feed her another spoonful, this time laced with the Cosequin for her arthritis.

Stacy also told me to stop at Wal-Mart and get some L-Lysine, which I've seen recommended her on TheCatSite. She wrote down to crush the 500 mg. tablet and feed 1/8 teaspoon / day.

Barely got back in the car from Wal-Mart and the heavens opened up - 3/4 inch of rain in the 15 minute drive home!

And my old lady cat is eating wet food again. Happy, happy, happy.

Vibes that she keeps this up please.

Edit & Correction: Canned food is Performatrim, not Weruva. And she ate most of the second spoonful with Cosequin

My veterinarian telephoned late this afternoon, to see how Mist is doing. Said she'd be around until early tomorrow afternoon if I needed to call for any reason. So nice of her to do this, and on a Sunday too.

And BTW - her horse did really well in his first event, and the judge for the second one was "funny" and he didn't place as well as she thought he should have.

And Mist continues to eat, about a quarter of a small can at a time. She must be feeling better. I know I am!
