I had hoped that the steroids and antibiotic shots Luna got a week ago would take effect and help her sneezing but she was still sneezing since Thursday PM so I took her back to the vet. He prescribed her cyproheptadine as an antihistamine. I am reading up on it here and it seems like it is primarily an appetite stimulant? Is it an effective antihistamine? What other side effects should I look for?

I have to say I am starting to dislike this particular doctor at my vet. I have been going to this animal hospital for years but I first met this guy in March when Luna had her first ulcer and I liked him then. He seemed like he was really good with cats. Now I have seen him twice in a week and I still think he's good with cats but not people. He was telling me what's wrong without even listening to me describe her symptoms! Also, it may sound bad but I think he could have cut me some slack and charged me the lesser office visit fee because I had only seen him a week ago even if it was for a different symptom because it is likely related.

Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and is also prescribed as an appetite stimulant (My kitties have been prescribed this by different vets for appetite). Side effects are rare, and are the ones seen on antihistamine: lethargy and such. You should try calling him on the phone with new symptoms instead of just bringing your kitty in - this way you don't get charged, only if they need to see the kitty.... I do this quite often with Bugsy, especially when he was going through his 8-month long diarrhea... I was in contact with his vet at least 1-2x a week... Can you imagine the vet bill if I just went in every time?

Yea. That's my other beef with this guy, he didn't return my calls (2) on Friday. I thought he may have had the holiday weekend off but nope.... he was there today! He looked up her nose with an otoscope today which I guess was necessary to see if she had an obstruction or polyps.

About 3-4 hours after her dose Luna started acting strange. Actually after I gave it to her she went under the bed which is really unusual for her. I got her to come out with a toy then she slept on her bed. She got up and walked around and she seemed a little off. She finished her dinner and came back in the bedroom and stopped crouched over in the doorway, eyes wide open but pupils thin and it looked like her mouth was open for a few secs. Then she acted like she was chasing something in the air, following it with her eyes and jumping. My husband got her attention with one of her toys. I called my vet at 11 pm, they have a tech there 24/7, and asked if it sounded like a bad side effect and she even called the doctor and he said the main side effect is drowsiness. The vet tech thought she'd be ok overnight and in the morning I could decide if I want to administer another dose. All the while it didn't help her sneezing one bit.
