Getting started

I'm looking for a helpful start about Bengal breeding. I grew up with parents who for a time had breeding rights to Vizlas but my husband I are adamantly in love with the Bengal and Husky (If we had to choose a dog) breeds.

However. We don't know where to start. So, seeing as we want to take this responsibly we have decided to wait a year or two and first learn the in's and out's of Bengals. We tried contacting local breeders but we felt like they were trying to pressure us into buying one of their kittens more than help us learn about the breed. So, to start we've mostly just purchased books about shows and what qualities to look for. It's hard to find any material though about how to participate.

I was hoping to find a community here that could help educate me and hubby so that when we finally decide to take the plunge and get started that we do everything right the first time <3.

If you've never owned a Bengal, how do you know you are passionate about breeding them?

The best way to start is by showing a neuter or 2 for a few years, you'll learn the standards and network with other breeders at a show, gaining a mentor is very important too.

Then you look into getting breeding girls and possibly a stud, though many use their mentors studs to begin with.

Breeding is basically giving up your life. You must miss nights out, important family events, no vacations etc. It's also very expensive. The rewards are worth it, but it's not all sunshine and roses, having other breeder friends helps in the hard times and to celebrate the good.

Shows are the way to start. The more you see bengals and how they are being judged and why will give you lots of information. You'll need to develop 'the eye' for the breed to know what are the cats' good and bad features. If you get to handle lots of bengals, that's even better. To really get to feel and know the actual sceletal structure, head shape etc. is very good. They can vary surprisingly much. And of course getting to know many bengal breeders will help a lot.
