Cats not getting along after years of being fine

Hello,

We have a 9-year-old male and 10-year-old female cat (not related) who got along fine for about 8 years. However, for the last 9 months or so we've been unable to keep them in same room for any length of time. When we do, the male becomes aggressive towards the female, who hisses and retreats. This started suddenly and hasn't improved, even after prolonged periods of separation. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can integrate them again? The separation has resulted in our having to get a separate litter box and food/water dishes, which is a pain. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks. racsan46

Have you had them both checked by a vet to make sure neither is having medical issues?

You should have more than one litter box regardless, the general rule of thumb is one per cat and then an extra.

This happened with my two cats as well a few years back. When they were 9 (female) and 8 (male), they started to fight out of nowhere. After one really bad fight where they were screaming and a claw got stuck in the other's eyebrow, I separated them and basically had to reintroduce them to each other again. They smelled each other's scent through a door and played with each other's paws under the door... After a few days of separation, I opened the door for a few hours and supervised. Then I closed the door at night to separate them again. You just need to take it slow and keep them under your supervision for a few weeks/months. Sometimes animals get annoyed and sick of each other just like humans do. It usually gets better in time, but you just need to be patient. Best wishes!
