nursing queen - acting up ?

Hello,
We rescued a cat and found out she was pregnant. She gave birth on June 23 (we are now July 4) so the kittens (4) are now 10 days old.

We provided our Queen with a nursing cardboard box large enough, and well padded, in our bedroom where we have left her with the litter. The room is not accessible anymore to our 3 other cats (13, 7 and 1 year old).

We were fortunate to be granted full access to the babies from birth. We are able to manipulate (only us the owners) them at ease and whenever we want. We always do it when Queen is around so we can ask permission and she can control the "visit".

This morning, Queen took a new step and took 1 kid out of the nursing box and brought it on the floor under the bed for what we tought was some one-on-one time.Then she took a 2nd then finally all 4. After a while she left them there and lay by the door requesting to be let out as we do a couple of time a day so she can get acostumed to the other cats.

Is this behavior (moving the kids) normal or is she telling us something ??

It's not unusual for a mom cat to move her little ones. In fact, they usually do it in the wild, too, to reduce the chance of being found by a predator.

It may be the bedding in the box needs to be changed, or a new box; since cats can't do housework, their only solution is to move when the den gets dirty.

Thanks mrblanche for the tip about the moving around in the wild.
It must be it since the bedding is being changed everyday with clean padding
