Went to bed last night approx 21.00 with a splitting headache and that was threatening a migraine. Woke this morning a few times with it in full blast and then drifted off as was dreaming bad. Got up at 8.00 this morning and had a little breakfast before going back to bed an hour later -its now 13.13 and have just materialised again from bed feeling better. For me this has been one killer of a headache / migraine to last this long.
Do any of you get them and what do you take / do to relieve them?

Feeling a little washed up right now

I have terrible headaches daily. Most of them are sinus related though. Occassionally I have migranes and they sometimes last for weeks and are debiliatating. I get nauseated and vomit, can't tolerate any movement or light. They're terrible. I use a nasal spray called Imitrex. It's prescription and it works very well. There are also Imitrex pills and injection. The pills aren't as quick and don't seem to work as well and of course the injectable I'd have to go in for. So the Nasal spray works more like the injectable.

Movin' on up!
I've had migraines, since I was 17 and the only thing that has ever worked is an ergot derivative called Fiorinal.

I only get migraines once in a blue moon, when I do I just wanna crawl in a hole and die they are soo bad. The hospital here actually considers migraines to be emergencies now. I wished I'd known that before, it would have saved me hours of suffering. I don't like needles but they are nothing compared to the painful throbbing in yer head.

Migraines can be a real headache! pun intended

The hubby and I both have them, me occasionally, him more frequently.
He has tried several prescripton and non-prescription drugs, and the best relief he can find is a new prescription drug over here called Axert. It really helps the pain, and has no side effects like sleepiness, etc.
BTW, do you have any idea what triggers your migraines ? Things like chocolate, aged cheese, onions (raw- don't ask why cooking makes a difference, but it does) are the usual culprits. Also, do you eat a lot of foods that contain MSG (monosodium glutamate)? High levels of that flavor enhancer (found in lots of chips and meat tenderizers) is a really big trigger too...
Hope some of this helps !

I do get them Migraines , not to often any more . Now it is more sinus headache and I do have them almost every day . When I feel the first sign of pain I take right away 2 Motrin ,I buy them in the Store . Sometimes I have to take up to 800mg to help me with the pain . I do try to be in a room where I can relax , that most of the time helps me . Good luck and hopefully you feel better .

I have been having problems with my nerves lately and lot of mirgrains too. I have two different precription meds that I can use. One is Fiorinal and the other is Axert. For me the Fiorinal works best even if it does put me to sleep!!!

Eeeeks! Migraines. Yes...I've lived with them for years. Hate them. I can normally tell a few hours before that one is arriving and sometimes I can catch it in time before it goes into full blown Migraine mode. Other times, I'm not so lucky and it takes a few days before I can completely wipe it out. And yes..I am drained when it finally goes away and need to sleep almost immediataly. I'm not able to sleep at all when one hits though. I am constantly in the washroom or curled up in bed praying it'll end...

I've been on Fiorinal, Imitrex (not the spray) Am now taking Amerge. They took me off of Imitrex because I would get heart palpitations. Amerge seems to work well as long as I get it in time.

When my migraines were really bad (I mean...non stop relief at all for weeks on end) They sent me for a cat scam and an MRI. Nothing was detected and I was told it was something I either eat or breathe in. Which basically narrows it down to ummm.... anything???

Good luck and I hope you find some relief with something.

Advil Migraine Gel Caps seems to work for some people who get migraines occasionally. It doesn't work for me but maybe give it a try.

Kev, I had my first migraine in years about a month ago. Aspirin has always been best for me for migraines, but I tried one of those cooling pads along with the aspirin this time and the headache was GONE in 5 minutes! Can you get those there in England?

I remember having headaches dating back to being in elementary school, and I was diagnosed with having migraines at age 17. My migraines can last anywhere from 4 hours to more than a week.

With my migraines, I get a few different types, which I differentiate by where the pain is and how intense. I get the sort where there's a stabbing pain behind my eyes and usually on one side of my head. I take Maxalt for those, and it's only available by prescription. For tension migraines, which the pain usually sets in my neck and back of my head, a high dosage of Advil usually takes care of those. The Maxalt won't touch the tension migraines, and the Advil won't touch the other. I need to sleep with either though for them to do any good.

I've tried Fioricet, Tylenol3 (with codeine), Imitrix (both pill and nasal spray), Zomig and Amerge. With Fioricet and Tylenol3, they seemed to make me feel a bit loopy and didn't help the pain. But feeling that loopy, it didn't seem to matter much to me that I still hurt. With Imitrix and Zomig I happen to get flu symptoms... a small percentage of people have that sort of reaction, and lucky me is one of them. And Amerge did absolutely nothing for me, but at least didn't give me additional pain. I also take Excedrin for my "mild" migraines - ones that hurt but I'm still somewhat functional.

The only caution I can give you about over-the-counter pain killers like Excedrin or Advil, etc. I had a terrible headache/migraine for about 9 months. The problem was that it started as a migraine, and my prescription meds didn't work, so I took Excedrin. It helped for awhile, but the pain came back, so I took more. Over and over and over. And what happens are these evil rebound headaches that you get when you come off the meds... so you need more meds to make them go away... just to repeat the cycle. It took a solid two weeks with no meds to get rid of the rebounding, and it sucked.

And I had the MRIs and Cat Scans for them, but they came back with nothing on them to show why I get the migraines.

I used to get migraines really badly. Luckily for me my Neurologist asked me to take part in the Imitrex testing. I told him that the nasal spray was the best thing that ever happened for migraine sufferers! A couple of weeks later Imitrex was on the market for prescriptions and I'm glad that I participated in that test!

I have migraines too since I was about 8, but mine have become more menstrual-related and usually come in the middle of the night. I know what few days during my cycle I'm likely to get one, so I take low doses of Advil just before and during that time. If I still get one, I take Promethazine, which is actually an anti-nausea medicine (I usually vomit a lot when I have a migraine) but it also has a slight sedative effect. So, I don't have to vomit and I fall back asleep. But I'm pretty much no good the next day-I call it my "headache hangover". I've tried Imitrex, and have the nasal spray as a back-up if the Promethazine and Naproxen (my second line of defense) don't work. I don't like it, because I've also had palpatations and since there's a history of heart disease in my family, but the doctor still wants me to keep it around if needed.
