I had Genever out on the harness & leash while I was sitting on the bench reading this afternoon. Then BF came home and got a ham sandwich and was eating outside, Genever thought the sandwich was hers of course..
Anyway I finally got her attention off her daddy's dinner and she was lying near the lemon tree. Well 2 hummingbirds very, very close to each other, and flew towards the lemon tree. Genever spotted them. They flew lower, pretty much right at her, and she jumped up and grabbed/pounced and got one! I grabbed her off it right away (i was maybe 3 feet away) and the hummingbird was almost still, on its back, moving very slightly. I said "What should we do?" thinking she got it bad, but when I touched it, it took off! Wow!! I cannot believe the birds came so close to Genever though, you'd think birds would know not to get near a predator! Unless they were just that into each other that they didn't notice... Anyway, all are ok.

OMG! That is one quick kitty, and 2 stupid hummingbirds
! Genever must have been so proud, and if anything the hummingbirds learned a good lesson, love should never be blined

WOW Genever must be very quick, when necessary
. And those 2 hummingbirds were not very smart
. The little hummingbird was just stunned and glad it got away
. G-cat will be so proud of herself now.

Yeah, we couldn't believe it how close those hummingbirds flew to us! I mean, there are usually a few buzzing around the yard, what seems like yelling at us or each other to get out of 'their' yard. (I know they're very territorial) Sometimes they'll swoop down and up, back and forth in a U, in front of us almost, but never fly AT us. So they just must not have been paying attention when they flew AT Genever. Luckily I was right there, or we'd have had a feathery mess, albeit a little one.

Right now, Mister is in our yard, near the tangerine tree, staring at the ground. I went over to see, and something ran down this little hole! It was so fast I didn't catch what it was, but there is something underground there.... and he has been staring for about a half hour now. What the heck is it???

We've also got what seems to be a family of Cooper's Hawks in the big trees across the storm channel behind our yard. A month or so ago one flew through the lantana bush and caught a sparrow or something. They eat smaller birds. I'm sure it'll happen again, since we have quite a few birds at the feeders.. Not very pleasant, but hey, they've got to eat too.

Who knew wildlife in L.A. could be so fascinating?

Poor hummingbird

Genever must be a good hunter to be able to catch a hummingbird.

Probably a guy Hummingbird macking on the other one, oblivious to all else. I've walked my shopping cart right into a huge can't-miss-it stocked shelf doing that before!
