Wow, I can't believe we're into July already!

Today's question:
If the power was out for 24 hours and you had no electricity, how would you spend your time?

If it was during the day I'd probably get outside, go for a walk or relax on my back deck with my Kobo. If at night I'd probably just light a few candles and curl up with Dana & the furkids.

Having just gone 36 hours with no power, I know exactly what I'd do: yard work, sleeping, reading during the daylight hours, and driving around town looking for coffee!

Actually this happenned to me last summer. Power was out for eighteen hours. Part of the time it was light, so I went for a walk with my dogs. When it got dark, out came the candles and flashlights. Had a fun play session with the cats in the dark
. And just read a book. It really was quite relaxing, other than the worry about my food in the fridge.....

Having lived without power for almost a month (after a typhoon when I lived in Guam), I know exactly what I would do. Spend time outside during the day or get things done around the house. At night, light every candle I have and read, play with the cats or go visit someone that does have power.

To this day, I always have a ton of candles and batteries "just in case". Where we live now, we have power outages a few times a year so they come in handy. What stinks though is we have a well that is run by electricity, so no power equals no water. So I usually have a few gallons of water on standby as well.

I'd probably read, I love to read and can do it for hours at a time. I would conserve any power I have to keep my ipad alive through my computer, that should mean I'm good for 24 hours, so I may play games on my ipad, I assume there won't be any internet cuz usually that goes out with the power...

I can't believe this is actually a tough question! Everything I do involves electricity (computer, TV, etc).

Um.. I'd read, clean the apartment, drive around to see what's open with electricity (ie: Mall), and go INSANE.

Used to power outtages here. Invested in a few dollar store LED flashlights - one for the head, one booklight and a couple of handhelds. More reliable than coal oil lamps and better around the cats. Just went through a power outtage, and just like many in the area, head to the bar to eat - even without power, the gas grill works.

We lose power often, during the summer from t-storms and during the winter, notably during very bad snowstorms when the winds are really high or when we get a lot of ice.

The most memorable power outage was on Christmas Day about 10 years ago. Our kids were supposed to spend the day with us, but, due to blizzard conditions, they simply couldn't get here and it was my first Christmas without our DS. That really bothered me. I had started cooking our Christmas dinner and the power died.

DH took matters into his own hands. Went outside and started the gas grill. Took the stuffed pork chops, potatoes, gravy and dried corn in their pots and pans on the grill and cooked everything. Since we have a camping coffee pot, he was able to make coffee for me, bless his heart. That was all we had for our holiday dinner (we didn't want to keep opening and closing the fridge), but it was really delicious. And while we were eating, DH was heating water on the grill so that we could wash dishes. While it was still light outside, we could both read books we had given each other for Christmas. And when it got too dark to see, we lit candles and cuddled in bed with the cats for awhile to stay warm. We lay there and chatted. Then we blew out the candles. Around 3:00 or so the next morning, we awakened to lights in the kitchen and we could hear the electricity coming through the registers. It was an interesting Christmas, that's for sure.

Today's solution for the THIRD outtage in as many days was go mooch lunch. I have an elderly cousin in town and she loves to feed me as she has no one to cook for anymore. Town had power, different grid.

We cheat, because we've got a generator and a 100 gallon water tank in the RV.

But if it's out for days (as it sometimes is) and it's too hot outside, we take the kitties and head to a hotel.
That happened once.

It was out for a week over the winter when we lived in a house. We could have just popped into the RV... but we stuck it out with bottled water, flashlights, candles, the camping stove. We had to heat up water to keep the fish alive.

It was nice and quiet without phones and internet! We read a lot.

My parents lost their power in February a couple of years ago. It was out for almost 2 weeks, with negative double digit temps. We emptied the toilet tanks, and turned on the faucets, to prevent broken pipes, and they moved in with me. They then lost their power the following July, from an electrical storm (can you say bad luck??!!?) and it was out for 10 days! (That was the electrical storm that fried my computer.) They stayed in their home, but ate meals out. My dad says if they ever lose power again, he's going to install a natural gas standby generator.
