Hi all, Sorry for the lengthy read!
I'm surprised it took me so long to find this site - I've owned cats for 25 years and many years ago I used to breed and show purebred Abyssinians (I lost my remaining darling girl in November 2010). For the past several years I have been volunteering with a local no-kill animal rescue, answering the phones once a week and fostering. Due to my breeding background my specialty is fostering mama cats and kittens, orphan kittens, and special needs or very sick kittens.
This "kitten season" I have fostered 10 kittens across four litters, five of them were hand-fed from 4 days old (now 8 weeks). Volunteering is often heart-rending, sad, frustrating, and occasionally joyous, but I feel it's important so I keep on doing it.
My five year old daughter loves all the kittens, and she's a great help with all the little tasks that have to be done. My husband is also fully supportive and patient of having so many felines around. At one point this year I had 15 cats and kittens in various places in the house, including my own four permanent residents.
Speaking of which, I should introduce them:
- Titus, longhaired odd-eyed white neutered male, 4 years old, adopted from SPCA of Eastern Quebec, Canada
- Lucius, purebred bengal, neutered male, 3 years old, purchased from Natureworks Bengals and Pixie-Bobs in Gananoque, Ontario, Canada
- Puffin, longhaired cream and white tuxedo, neutered male, 2 years old, rescued from living feral in Newfoundland, Canada
- Timmy, shorthaired brown tabby with white van, neutered male, 1 year old, rescued orphan foster from last year's "kitten season", now adopted.
And joining the residents in approximately a week or so is my newest baby, Drogo, longhaired dark brown tabby male, currently 6.5 weeks old and already weighing in at a very hefty 2lb 2oz!
