Kitten is still biting during play

Hello lovely cat people~

Some of you may recall my boyfriend and I recently adopted a new kitten from a rescue. We've finally settled on the name Tchaikovsky (Tchai for short) and he is a cute little booger and we love him lots. He had some parasites, which he's been/is being treated for, and has only had a couple of potty mishaps but those have stopped now that he's a little bigger and can get up and down off the bed easily.

But he is still biting our hands and feet when he plays. I know he is playing because he purrs as he does it, and will often switch to attacking our hands or feet while he's playing with a toy or just do it out of nowhere - so I'm pretty sure we aren't doing anything to provoke it like overpetting.

I was reading around about what we should do, and so what I have been doing is whenever he play bites or tackles my hands or feet I say "NO" loudly and clap my hands (if he's not latched onto one) and then put him down if I was holding him, or put him off the couch or bed if he's on there, and ignore him for a while. But this doesn't seem to be working - in fact, he's been biting HARDER lately. And saying "NO" and clapping doesn't seem to phase him half the time - sometimes it startles him out of whatever he's doing and other times he ignores it completely.

The other day I bought a plush toy for kitties (about the same size he is, catnip included and all) and now when he bites I've been saying "NO" and then giving him the plush toy. He usually wrestles with it happily for a little while but then attacks our hands again.

Does anyone have any more suggestions? His little teeth right now aren't doing much damage but we need him to learn that this is a no-no. He also attacks us when we're sleeping, which isn't so bad until he starts pouncing our faces. I've had to close him out of the bedroom the last week or so. On another note he also isn't neutered yet, will that help him stop biting when he's ready to have that done?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Have you tried hissing at him (just like a mommy cat would do)?

Hi there, i adopted a kitten back in september and she has only started licking instead of biting recently. It's like she grew up over night so maybe this will happen with your kitty. I would keep doing what your doing and just make him realise that it won't be tolerated. Just ignore him and he will get the idea but it does take a long time.

Yayi - Actually I have tried it, but it doesn't seem to have any more effect than "NO." He's from a rescue so I can't even know if he had a mommy kitty to hiss at him before I guess, but it doesn't seem to work.

LadyGanonoque - Okay, that's kind of good to hear, I was hoping it was just a matter of time and not so much of me doing it wrong. Thanks! We'll keep doing what we're doing and I hope he learns soon, his little teeth kind of hurt :P haha

My Bijou was a little biter. Firstly, never play with him with your bare hands, use a wand toy. Secondly, when he nips your ankles while you are moving, he thinks he's chasing a toy so stop dead in your tracks, say OW loudly and just stand there or remove him from your ankle.

The other thing is he is probably teething and needs things to chew on. Those fat plastic straws are perfect. I would toss 3 or 4 around the house and when one got too chewed up I would just toss it and add a couple new ones. He'll outgrow it but you will need to be consistent with what you are doing. I know how annoying it is but just hang in. Bijou is now the gentlest, sweetest cat ever, he wouldn't bite a flea.

I just took him in for his annual today and the vet fell in love. Bijou was the perfect gentleman even though he was not happy. He growled a little but allowed the vet to pick him up and handle him easily.

Just keep up the loving on him and you'll probably end up with a little sweetheart of a cat.

ETA: Get him used to having his paws handled and played with (after the biting of course) so that you can easily clip his nails yourself as he gets older. Kittens have sharp claws so you could perhaps get your partner to hold him while you clip the tips. I clip Bijou's about every 2 weeks and he is so used to it now that I don't even have to hold him to do it.
