So on the 16th, we took Sami in to the vet, assuming she was going to be put down. Here it is almost 2 weeks later and she is still at the vet.

We call almost every day and ask to speak to the vet that is taking care of her. We get "she'll call you back when she is available". We never get calls back and the receptionist keeps saying "she still has diarrhea".

I love this vet, normally, but this is so wrong. We were told that if she wasn't better in 2 days, she would talk to us about euthanizing her. 2 weeks later and we can't seem to get a hold of her now.

We went in to visit her yesterday. She hasn't gained any weight and looks only slightly better than when we brought her in. The vet was "too busy" to talk. So we left a message for her to call as soon as she could. No call again.

Its clear Sami isn't going to get better. She is alive by them giving her fluids and not by a will to live. I could see it in her face.

Should we just go get her and take her to another vet to have her put down? Or should I trust my vet? This whole thing is just really bizarre and frustrating. It is not even about money because the vet said we would not get a bill for this...I care about Sami suffering. Two weeks at the vet, in a cage surrounded by animals (which she hates) is just...wrong.

I am sorry, but this is bordering animal cruelty on my book. Shame on this vet!
Yes! take Sammy to another vet and have them do the right thing - and while you are at it, choose another vet and never look back - this is beyond ridiculous!

Oh that is just so sad! My heart breaks for you and Sami! Have them give her some pain meds if she's in pain, bring her home and spend some loving time with her, and then take her to another vet.

BTW, I know it is not your fault...I have been reading your posts and I can see how much you are suffering with this whole situation
I am just angry at the vet... I am so sorry you are going through this...

I agree with Laurie now that she posted.... Maybe some love before she goes would be good... Some last good memories for both of you to be kept at the heart

I am so so very sorry for you and for Sami. This is outrageous and extremely unprofessional, uncaring and just plain unkind of this vet not to be in daily contact with you about your precious Sami. I would also go and get your cat tomorrow. Get copies of every test they performed. Find another vet who will treat you and your cats with respect and dignity. Again, my prayers are with you during this emotional time. But you and Sami deserve better and YOU deserve answers and daily reports from the vet when your cat is in the hospital. many more vibes for Sami.
and tons of
to you.

Wow. This is heartbreaking. I am so very, very sorry, LuvMyParker.

If this were my cat, I would be waiting for the office to open tomorrow and I would refuse to leave until that vet spent some time with me, explaining precisely what she was doing and why. And if she didn't have a DARN good reason - a reason I understood and agreed with - Sami and I would leave be leaving together.

This is your cat, not hers, and as you say, Sami is not in a good place, and that's very sad.

If you know it's Sami's time, can you have a vet (any vet) come to your house? It's one of the kindest ways, I think, to release a cat from this world.

All my thoughts and prayers are with you right now, LuvMyParker. <<<hugs>>>

It was rough seeing her. She was above a yappy Lhasa Apso and next to a snoring kitty that had a broken leg. She looked annoyed. She gave "hugs" and came to sniff the camera. (Roommate really wanted pictures of her there, for some reason). I still feel SUPER guilty for leaving her there.

This is very odd for this vet though. When Parker was there, I was updated on him and got a call when he was ready to leave.

I am sort of thinking the receptionist is partially to blame here. She is VERY snotty and always seems in a real rush to leave when it's closing time. I wonder if she's even giving the messages.

I'll get Sami as soon as I can and have her go peacefully.

I thank you all for the kind words and vibes. I will let her know too.

Wow, I've never heard such a thing. It's all wrong in my opinion. I'm so glad you're going to go get her. That's no way for a kitty that has been so loved to spend her last days or weeks. She should be home with you.

I wouldn't wait for a call. Just show up and tell them to give you your cat.
And good luck. Please post about her when you get her.

The vet closed early today and I have some appointments tomorrow so I can't get her then either. I feel horrible but I did call them and told them I want to see the vet, so they "kindly" gave me an appointment on Saturday. (Closed for the holiday on Friday).

Hopefully they will at least keep her comfortable for the next few days. I have such a guilty conscience about this but I just don't have time tomorrow...I've already rescheduled my appointments.

Some vibes for Sami to be strong until Saturday would be very welcome. I hope you guys don't think I am a bad person for having to leave her there.

I will never let them put another cat down myself. Once I discovered and talked to Alternative vets and found out there were natural ways to help my kitties, I will always try that 1st.

Vets use chemical drugs, like Panacur. Not even FDA approved in the USA. They are now into drug pushers like our own doctors. I've lost 7 cats in a row to a vet or a shelter. I kept this one free & clear for 5 yr. I took him for a gum culture. Instead she gave him a full exam, barely looked at his gums, & shot Panacur down his throat. He went into almost immediate urinary blockage & distress. He had to get a horrible operation, I had to surrender him to 10 Lives, & if he's still alive, he's in torture everyday.

Get your kitty out of that locked steel lonely cage. He needs your love. Love is more healing than anything.

At least call an Alternative vet and see what they say. Me. for myself , I take one shot of blackberry brand for diarrhea. It never did not work. I came from an athletic depression family. We had no health care, so we only knew natural. We were the healthiest family I've ever met to this day.

There is really no need for a second opinion in this case. She is 18 years old and her health has been declining for several weeks. Her liver is failing, we know for sure.

If I really thought she had another chance, believe me, we'd do all we could for her. But I know in my heart and I can tell by looking at her that it is her time to go. I really feel that animals let you know when they are ready to cross the rainbow bridge and that's what Sami is doing now.

She gets very stressed out in the car and I feel that dragging her to different vets and doing a ton of tests and having her poked and prodded will only make her feel worse.

Aside from that, we have called other vets and even they think, just from what we've described that her time is almost up. If she was younger, I would fight, really.

Well, went in to see Sami. She meowed at us and seemed a bit more lively. Clearly annoyed at the raccoon caged next to her (baby whose mother was hit by a car) but very interested in it.

Waited over 2 hours to see the vet and she said she is giving Sami a pancreatic enzyme. Her diarrhea is off and on but seems to be getting better (according to her). She begged us to give her another week, since she is showing so much improvement.

Her exact words were "I don't want to kill her. Please don't kill her". So we left.
I wanted to leave with her but she does seem much better than the last time. Was I wrong for leaving her there? Its so hard at this age, not knowing how long she has, even if she gets well. I'm torn...

Sweetie, it's a decision only you can make.
You saw her - and if she doesn't look miserable, and the vet thinks her chances are good of improving the quality of life and giving her more time with you while being healthy... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does she have something that smells like you there with her? You might want to consider dropping of a sweaty t-shirt, bringing Feliway for them to spray in her cage. And if she doesn't have a "hidey spot," you might want to take a tent bed or something for her to hide in. These are all things that may help her stay less stressful.

...and while you're there, ask the vet (if you didn't), to give you a probability that this is going to help, and how much time they think she may have left if it does work.

Oh sweetie, I'm sorry. I've been praying for the right thing for Sami since I first saw your thread. If your vet said, "I don't want to kill her, please don't let her die", then I think thats a bit shocking to hear from a vet. I felt terrible for you and your baby when I read that! Does she think that helping a cat pass over and free it of pain is murder? A vet should want to do whats best for the cat. That must have made you feel terrible. If you haven't seen any hopeful improvements in her condition then I think I would take her away from that vet. This isn't how you want her to spend what remaining time she has left. I'm keeping you and Sami in my heart during this difficult time.
