Best window seat?

Hi all.

I recently purchased this through LakeView catalog, on sale for $10.

I liked the idea that it does not make holes in the wall. It holds up to 20 lbs (which is fine since my cat is 14/15 lbs).

Once I put it up, it does not seem very sturdy. I'm apprehensive about it, feeling like if my cat jumps too hard or get too excited on it, it'd collapse.

I love the idea of letting him sit up high on the window, gazing out at the birds, but I want something stronger, yet, not going to break my bank, or make holes in the wall.

does anyone have any suggestions?

If you weigh 150lbs, and even lightly move up and down on the scale, you can see it easily goes to 200lbs. Now imagine jumping on it! It'd likely spike to 500lbs or so.

So a 15lb cat needs a shelf that is rated for 50lbs or more static weight. I would consider something rated for 20lbs to be a danger to just about anything but a little kitten or Singapura.

Repairing holes in drywall is a pretty simple affair though, or are you renting?

Our shelves have been a hit, but they are likewise able to support probably 100lbs static weight.

those are some cool shelves in those videos!

I am renting, yes, and I'd like to try to keep minimal damage possible!
You've confirmed my apprehensiveness, Ducman. I didn't think about the jumping until I put the shelf up and felt how flimsy it was. Your math sounds accurate, I'll need to get a shelf that supports at least 50lbs.

Is there anything store-bought that you'd recommend? that won't damage the walls (much) and be safe? I saw something in Petco, but I cannot remember the weight limit on it.

I have 2 of these: http://www.petco.com/product/3225/Ca...lies_Furniture and ALL of my kitties LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them! You can either attach it to the windowsill with heavy duty velcro or with screws. When I first got it, I was single and renting, so I velcroed it to the sill. Worked VERY well, is very sturdy. That was over 10 years ago. Still have it and it's survived all of my cats' wild antics and jumping, not to mention hours upon hours of snoozing.

Here's Callie modeling for you:

My mom actually put a wooden t.v. tray with a cat bed on it under her window! It's sturdy and her husband was happy because he didn't want her screwing a seat into the window frame. She just put some kind of strong double sided tape down to hold the bed into place.

My window has no ledge and is very low to the floor so I had to make a little window seat for him - he loves it though
