It's unusual (but wonderful) that so many of these cats can be rehomed. Sadly, it is most often the case that when there are so many in such conditions, they are too wild to be adopted and thus are euthanized.

I cannot in my worst nightmares imagine living in conditions like that.

Those poor kitties. I hope the women can get some therapy to help them to learn to say no or at least ask for help to house kitties.

Rescues? Animal control will kill them. What a shame the nosey neighbor didn't call a real rescue agency instead. I wonder, did the person who turned her in really care about the cats, or did she just want the thrill of being on the news and getting the woman in trouble? I feel sorry for the women. I feel sorry for the cats. I'm sure they meant well but they couldn't handle it and didn't know what to do. This is tragic
But I feel for them all.

"Bob Downey, executive director of the Capital Humane Society, said about 95 percent of the cats could be put into adoptive homes with proper rehabilitation and medicine."

That doesn't sound like they'll be killed, now, does it? I volunteer for a shelter and resent your implications.

That's very good. I didn't see that. Where I live, only the rescue organizations and some Humane Societies will do that. Among most city shelters I know of, "control" means "kill." I wish every city could do so well with them as Lincoln has. So I'm very sorry I insulted you, but I have seen some very different shelters than you have. Keep up your good work.

I thought this was pretty interesting, but in the article it could be easily missed or overlooked.

"We are trying to create incentive for people to come adopt these cats," he said. "These cats need help and we have to provide that help so the cats will be adopted."

The Capital Humane Society will waive the $75 adoption fee and will give $100 to the adopter's veterinarian of choice for health care. The adopter will also receive 18 pounds of cat food and 25 pounds of cat litter.

Downey hoped waiving the adoption fee would provide adopters with money to care for the cats, not all of which are healthy.
