A little Trivia

Thread Starter
I keep hearing all of these little cat trivia and little known facts about cats and thought I'd share them now and then.

The cost of caring for a cat through it's lifetime is about $7000.00. This is for the bare necessities.

I wonder what we actually spend? In particularly the really spoiled meezers out there. The thought of it scares me

For me, you can probably tripple that, my cat is spoiled! He always gets a new toy at least once a week and he eats the quality food:P

The thought of actually adding it up frightens me terribly! And I think it would cause my husband to need an ambulance!

*Okay - after doing some very quick basic math I think I average about $450 a year per cat on basic care. With the *4 Cats I bet it's about 2000 a year after toys and incidental vet visits. This doesn't include the big fancy extras that you buy once in awhile like new cat trees etc.

This included:
Dry Food $50/bag and lasts avg 1 month (=600/yr)

Wet Food about $35 a month but it's tricky because I open a can every few days - it's not regimented so I'm averaging cost at a case per month. (420/yr)

Regular cat Wellness vet visit is 100 each @ current price (not "sick" visits)

Cat dental care is about $220 each (each cat is done every 3 years on average)

Animal license is $5 per year

Cat litter : I shop and stock up on sales - I'm estimating I spend $225 a year

Toys and misc is unaccounted for - Birthdays and Christmas is extra. Currently we are converting our garage into a cat room, that's extra! and about est $3,000 cost.

I know I spend more than that! I now have 3 cats (1 adult and 2 kittens).

Litter: 6 bags/mth @ $10.00 ea = $60.00/mth = $720.00/year

Food: 4 bags dry food/mth @ $7.00 ea = $28.00/mth = $336.00/year
30 tins wet food/mth @ 79 cents ea = $23.70/mth = $284.40/year

That's $1340.40 per year for 3 cats just for food and litter.

Now calculate that over the lifespan of the cats. Factor in toys, medical, any medications if needed.....I don't know where they come up with $7,000.00.

The Wellness plan is $20/mo (rounded) per cat, so $720/yr
Litter, I buy 2 or 3 25-35lb containers per month, around $540/yr
Food, 1-2 20lb bags of Science Diet Light, around $720/yr
Misc toys/treats/etc, around $120ish

Comes out to about $31,500 for 15 years for all three not counting medications if needed or anything extra....

Still cheaper than having a kid
