poop outside the pan

OK, cat behavior experts. I have a poop problem. At least one of the boys has decided to poo outside the litter pan... only downstairs, not upstairs. In the half bath off the kitchen. I have cleaned and sanitized the pans, replaced the litter, etc. Do you think one of them is telling me he doesn't like the corn-based litter?

I had been using a mix of Dr. Elseys and WBCL about half and half.. and I am migrating towards all WBCL.

I have two sets of litter pans upstairs and downstairs... five in total, tho' sometimes I set out a sixth. Seven cats ... I know the rule about one-plus but I have no place to put extras.

I often have a mat in front of the pans but it got poop on it and it's in the wash...

It seems to happen about 3x a week... so not every day.

I mean it is not unusual for one of them to kick stuff out of the pan while digging but this is different. This is ....fresh.

hi Addie, can you leave some of the pans with Dr. Elsey's only - say a couple of them, and see what happens?
If this started after you transitioned the litter, there could be a possibility you want to rule out.
Do you know who is doing it? Any other changes besides the litter?

Hi, Carolina... No unfortunately I don't know who is doing it. One of the bigger cats given the ummm.... "size" of the deposit. I will get some more Dr. E's tomorrow. Dump what's there, clean the pan yet again and see if that helps.

I do have pee squirters, too, and high sided litter pans ( one in each location) has helped some with that.

Sometimes there is poo on the floor that I think someone kicked out of the pan.... but this is like a whole BM on the floor right in front of ONE of the pans. Pretty much in the same spot repeatedly. Only the downstairs bathroom.

ETA : had a thought. Casper has been coming downstairs over the last two months or so. He and Prowler especially do not get along. I wonder if there is a correlation and if I should start running Feliway downstairs as well as upstairs... hmmm.....

Pooping right next to the pan is often an indication they don't like the litter or the box... Since you are switching litters, I would say there is a high chance of problems with the litter. I would change those boxes specifically to Dr. Elsey's...
